I'm new to SuSE and to Linux in general and am having a problem with my 7.3 installation - I can't manage to compile anything from source. I have made sure to install all the "Development" packages from CD, but whenever I try ./configure or make (as per instructions), I get errors about files not being found. The one that surprises me most is a complaint about gnomeConf.sh not being found - apparently, this should be installed with Gnome but I can't find it anywhere. I've tried searching the web but to no avail. Can anyone give me a pointer? As a general rule, when you're missing a file you can use the file in the root of CD1, the DVD, or the ftp install directory called ARCHIVES.gz. Just do zgrep file_youre_looking_for ARCHIVES.gz In the case of gnomeConf.sh this gives zgrep gnomeConf.sh ARCHIVES.gz ./CD4/suse/gnm4/gnome-libs-devel-1.4.1.4-90.i386.rpm: -rw-r--r-- root root 970 Mar 25 22:00 /opt/gnome/lib/gnomeConf.sh So the rpm in question is gnome-libs-devel and is on CD4. When you compile programs that use rpm foo you generally need foo-devel. regards Anders -- `When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, `it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less.'

zgrep file_youre_looking_for ARCHIVES.gz
or alternatively intall the package "pin" and in an Xterm (konsole whatever) type pin to have a dialog for you to type what you are looking for. -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://dinamizm.ath.cx

Thanks for this - most helpful!

LOL - so, having only the personal edition, I don't have this on CD. No huge problem, I'll hunt it down on the SuSE website. A bit odd, though, that something so (apparently) commonly required isn't part of the personal edition! It's only required when you want to compile things. The target market of the personal edition is "normal" desktop users, and the idea is that those users generally don't want to compile their own software, so the devel rpms aren't included. //Anders -- `When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, `it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less.'
