Try using oggenc ogg is a lot better than mp3 i have canned all my mp3's and switched to ogg .

You can on a Rio Karma. <http://www.digitalnetworksna.com/shop/_templates/item_main_Rio.asp?model=261> It supports MP3, Ogg-Vorbis, FLAC and WAV (not that you'd put WAV files on a portable player, of course).
