On boot, after all POSTs go ok, lilo is dying. I have gotten something saying CRC error. Otherwise, it does this: LI- and freezes. This is a sudden predicament. I was rebooting and poof- it fails to come up. So I am htinking hardware error... but I can boot therescue CD just fine, and I can mount and manipulate the /, /usr and /var partitions perfectly. Or- it did once. It is no longer... Ideas?? I don't know if this is fixed yet or not... Does it say exactly "LI" or "LIL" or what? If it says just "LI", this is usually due to a problem with disk geometry or something like that. Are you saying you haven't been playinng with it at all? Probably the best idea is to boot of the CD and start the rescue system, then you can rerun LILO. That should fix it. I cannot start from the cd anymore- I hadn't been playing w/ the system geometry at all (I had been compiling a kernel). Neither can I boot from an NT cd (blue screens)- so at this point I'm fairly woirried. It did noot from the cd once, but now fails to. Thanks for youe help. -m On Sun, 5 Mar 2000, Chris Reeves wrote:

Fails? Well, now is probably not the best time to sort that, unless you have more information. Do you have any form of boot disk, either created during install, by yourself, or supplied by SuSE? If you do, you should be able to boot off that. If you don't have a bootable disk, you can create one from the SuSE CD. If you only have access to Windows, you can use the program rawrite on the CD to write a boot disk image from the /disks directory on the CD to a floppy disk, and boot off that. then
you can rerun LILO. That should fix it.

Hi People. I've noticed companies selling updated editions of RedHat GPL'd edition (i.e. they take the updated RPM's and integrate them). My question - does anyone know what files needed to be edited, in order for the SuSE GPL'd edition to recognise updated packages on a GPL'd CD? (the idea here is that SuSE should make available the new packages, certainly in yast, so that the user may install them). Any help greatly appreciated, Jason. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
OK I've gotten a chance amid work and studies to look at me beleaguered Suse system again. For those of you who don't remember: At 9:05 PM -0600 3/2/00, Michael Bartosh wrote:

Ideas?? Help-
Well, turns out I an make it boot off of some floppies. Like a freesh Suse one. Which wouldn't be bad for a temporary solution- after I boot into the installer I can chose 'bboot installed system, and most everything works-- except my 3com 509 for some reason (works ine in my notmal srtup) and that kernel doesn't have any IPMasq on. So I tried to be smart. dd if=/dev/fdo of=/tmp/file.img (switch disks) dd if=/tmp/file.img of=/dev/fd0 mount floppy, replace the old ram disk w/ the one I usually boot from and the kernel w/ my own home brewed (that works fine afaik) but poof- reboot, and it's LI again Any idea? -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
For the installing on slave, it should be perfectly fine since I had installed linux on slave HD before. I'm not quite sure if you should use the boot magic, but I think it should have no problems. Make sure you have your boot disk, so when anything goes wrong you can still boot and load lilo instead. Yes, there shouldn't be a problem here. You still need to have a /boot partition before the 1024th cylinder, but it only needs to be around 10MB.

I would use LILO here, and install it in the MBR. This shouldn't bother Windows too much, and it means you can keep as much real control over it as possible, without resorting to commercial software. Make sure you also make a spare boot floppy as well, though. LILO can cope with most situations, and so there aren't many cases where you wouldn't wanted to use it (one of these being if you want a GUI boot loader, but that's just overkill).
