Guys I honestly think that opensuse should have a base system , ie KDE [ but lightened up] repositories built into YAST [ BUT NOT ENABLED] Suse/novel did a great job integrating open office 2.0 and I think they should continue this. In the event that legal issues require no codec sect for multimedia programs in YAST before being allowed to enable the sources a legal signoff should appear releasing opensuse from all legal liability. There should be a team of coders that should take a bunch of the leading multimedia apps such as mplayer, acidrip, grip, streamtuner and others and build them into more attractive programs , I find when I try to get people to use linux that even though we have programs that do exactly the same thing as the windows counterparts everyone will say right off that they just look lame!

I would like to see a bare-bones minimal SuSE Linux installation. Something like the rescue system, with no X-Windows, and a decent editor such as mc. This would be an ideal base to build webservers, email servers etc on. Keith Roberts

So we are at a point where we need for (( [N] package selections * [N] languages )) iso images. This brings us nowhere peepz... Henne -- Henne Vogelsang, Subsystems "Rules change. The Game remains the same." - Omar (The Wire)

Keith, We have the option in OpenSUSE already. When you have the option of what desktop you want select other and then the box next to it. You can have a minimum SUSE install and then add to it as you please. Andy

Ok - obviously no looked at the distro yet! Is there the normal listing of available packages on the open-suse site, so I can see what software versions are available? Keith

With SLES I managed to get an autoyast install cut down to around 140 packages (and I was not able to remove anything else no more ). Personally I think that should be minimum. In total around 400 Mbyte. The current minimum set is too large for environments that require a base system installed and that's it. I know of places that do (even large ones). But then autoyast is good for that :D and the minimum set during a standard install is probably good for many paanthers out there.
