According to a FAQ on linuxiso.org, SuSE's license says it's illegal to redistribute the distro for money...and that they have sued people who do so.

I like SuSE, and want to help where I can, I thought they might like to know about this.... Do they know now? Do they monitor this list? Jerry

From the prices listed on that site, it would appear whoever is selling these "generic" copies are only charging for the CDs they used and nothing else. That is not illegal as you can recoup the cost of your media and certainly shipping. Lee -- --- KMail v1.6.2 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.0 --- Registered Linux User #225206 On any other day, that might seem strange...
Maybe the people are keeping the dvds and just selling the cds since 9.1 has both types of media in it... Not saying its right that they are doing it, cause I don't agree with it unless it is made available online to all, but it may not be burned media in some cases -----Original Message----- From: Jerome R. Most of the programs that constitute SuSE Linux are under the GPL and/or equivalent licenses. As is SuSE Linux as a whole under the GPL. Further, Yast2 was released under the GPL on 3/22/04. There is nothing wrong with distributing iso images of SuSE. It is well within our rights under the GPL. Linuxiso.org does not distribute them because: 1) SuSE does not officially make them available, and 2) They choose to respect SuSE's wishes to not have iso's distributed. SuSE used to use the non-free Yast license to effectively prohibit distributing SuSE Linux "as a whole" (you could always distribute the gpl'd parts). With Yast now gpl'd, they can no longer do that. So now they are holding off on releasing the ftp version for month or so to encourage people to buy the cd. So, when you are contemplating making/distributing copies of SuSE Linux, ask yourself, "Am I OK with this, or would I feel better if I bought a boxed set"? Let your principles guide you, as both are legal. Personally, I buy 1 copy of every other version, then and make/distribute copies as required. Regards, Mark On Sunday 30 May 2004 05:48 pm, Jerome R. But there are still non gpl parts on the dvd/cds - for example, java. Unless I'm mistaken, it is non redistributable. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
The sun license for java allows redistribution for the purpose of running a java program, provided the JRE accompanies said program. Since OO.org software and the JRE on on the dics, it seems to be within the scope the Sun's license. If there are any pieces of software on the discs that are not licensed for distribution, I am not aware of them. My personal opinion is that such software should not be included. SuSE seems to be very careful about not including software that would violate patents or license terms, such as MS fonts, CSS, Nvidia drivers, etc. Regards, Mark On Monday 31 May 2004 03:58 am, Carlos E. Notice that, unless things have changed, the ftp version of SuSE distros do not include Java, you have got to pull it down from Sun's servers; whereas the SuSE disks do include it. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

You mis-understand me.... I've bought a full profesional, of every release since 6.4. I've had my clients buy a full profesional for each server I install.... Jerry
