Re: [SLE] [alg] SOT - MS verus Linux ?
Hi Donn. I'm in the opposite boat as you - I've spent most of my life in
Windows clients, and am recently beginning the work to convert myself to
SuSE. Because I've been in Windoze for so many years, I have few problems
because I know how to make it work reasonably.
So, why the move for me?
1. Licensing cost, mainly, even for an individual
2. _much_ faster server and client operations when on Linux! (aka less
hardware needed)
3. open standards, as in no one hiding the API stopping me from doing custom
stuff.
4. More Linux tools are now available, and better drivers, than 3 years ago.
5. Because of #5, I can now run the few Windows apps my company dictates via
Wine or VMWare
I need to post-face this discussion by saying that I am a very senior
network designer and architectural specialist, so I quite well know how to
make things occur under the hood and don't mind getting dirty doing so. I
can therefore make the same laptop do quite more under Linux and do many
more things per unit of time than under Windows.
Those whom are un-initiated and not technically savvy will appreciate Yast
and other tools like it, which has significantly improved over time. I've
bought every SuSE version since the 6.0 release, and have watched it mature
along the way. Please don't everyone shoot me at once, but the parallel I
draw with the growth of Linux right now is that I watched Windows 95 when it
first released as compared to IBM OS/2 v2. Driver support became key rather
quickly, and you see whom rules the roost now for the desktop and whom is
sucking eggs.
In my most humble opinion, as long as the Linux community (in general)
continues driver development and platform support, they'll uproot Microsoft
from the desktop to a reasonable degree. As soon as Linux developers are
duly compensated for their creativity, that growth will present magnificent
headaches for MickeySoft, and then you'll see a real transformation of the
IT world as a whole.

Hey Group;
I am trying to convert some people to Linux. As a person that has not used Windows in over eight years I am not certain of the current limitations of Windows when compared to Linux.
I know of its basic headaches like crash, poor memory usage, lack of reasonable security, virus problems and license cost. I hear most often concerns about linux - "lack of help". I normally reply with "When was the last time you emailed Bill Gates and got a answer? I have emailed an heard from just about any Linux software maintainer I have ever emailed in less than a day".
However, I am in need of some of you that use or used Windows and know of its less obvious problems to add to my "Linux Benefits" list.
If possible seperate into versions - 9x, ME, XP, NT/2K and their Sever systems. (Not to mention Microsoft "Services for UNIX 3.0").
Unless it is like yesterdays "Swiss cheese" security flaw.
