Hello, In our Eng. Dept. we strongly need these YAST1 features mentioned below. With SuSE 8.0 we don't have the same level of control over the system as we had in its earlier versions 7.3/7.2 and so on. That is why we suspended upgrades from SuSE 7.2/7.3 to 8.0 utill this issue is resolved or we find another way around. If not, we'll be forced to find another distro, may be less flashy than SuSE but with more control over the system. SuSE folkz, when you create your new releases, please bear in mind that there are not only corporate dorks, sales-drones and M$ infected home users using your distro, but also engineers and programmers. If you tilt your software development only towards to graphical interfaces with mere functionality you'll loose significant portion of your supporters and admirers. Alex. -------------------

Whenever a vendor retires a product and replaces it with a new product, some of the legacy uses will have a problem. I personally like many of the features of YaST1, but more in the teaching the old dog new tricks category. But, I think that Alex hit on some important issues. Businesses that are remotely maintaining their systems via scripts will need to make changes. I would think that SuSe probably should address that in their FAQs by showing some examples of what some people might have been doing with YaST1 and how they can do the same thing with YaST2. In the past several months I have used YaST2 more and more, but I still go to YaST1 to quickly change the network settings. This weekend, when I move to 8.0, which I just bought, I'll be totally weened off of my dependence. But, the bottom line is that a howto transition from YaST1 to YaST2 for system administration would go a long way to help the business system admin to make the transition to YaST2 and keep them in the SuSE fold. As a LUG leader, I use Red Hat, Mandrake and SuSE in our installfests. I want to get the users up and running quickly. SuSE and Mandrake tend to be better. This last installfest, SuSE 7.3 didn't fare too well. We don't have the time to be patient and experiment. Especially since some of my volunteers showed up late and some of the participants showed up early. -- Jerry Feldman Portfolio Partner Engineering 508-467-4315 http://www.testdrive.compaq.com/linux/ Compaq Computer Corp. 200 Forest Street MRO1-3/F1 Marlboro, Ma. 01752
Basically the same reason why i've stopped at 7.2, what I consider as my 'live system' stable level (I don't update every release) and for now am only updating individual packages for security or client application requirement reasons. I've explained to the businesses that I look after why there is no planned 'live system' major update before december and they agree (it costs them money as well as me time). They have now however, put a six month limit (october) on this, past this point and i'm to look at other distro's to move them to, or go back to m$. 'slightly' peeved scsijon ps i've complained to suse over the sudden loss of yast1 and what trouble it has caused, even had an autoreply so i'm in the queue, hopefully a person will reply next with a useful answer. Or maybe i'll go back to writing scripts for it all as I did back when Yggdrasil was king. At 01:40 PM 5/2/02 -0700, you wrote:

Wow! And I thought I had it hard configuring all those Solaris boxes by hand. YaST1 did this for those who couldn't do it by hand..now there is YaST2. So they left a couple things out..it might be bumpy for a bit. They will fix it. You don't think that SuSE hasn't heard the bitching from us? pfft.. I just can't see leaving a distro as good as SuSE over this. It's just a bunch of whining. 9-10 things that yast1 did can be done with vi and a bit of time ..and one won't have SuSEconfig clean^H^H^H...configuring things behind ones back ;) Just wait a bit for a fix..YaST2 is modular and I am sure they are busy writing modules to satisfy everyone's gripes. And I know..YaST2 requires 64M of ram...boohoo...sorry but Windows2000/XP don't run on a 32M 486DX266 either. Please lets get into the 21st Century..at least a PII233 or something..what are they $10? sheesh. *Everything clipped because this is a general "Get over it..shit changes" statement. -=Ben --=====-----=====-- mailto:ben@whack.org --=====-- If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say that the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little. -GC --=====-----=====--
I sent an email to feedback at suse [As most people have I would assume =o)] and the email they sent back was the form one EXCEPT there was an added line at the bottom. It was along the lines of "We are working on a module for YaST2". So if the wonderful folks at suse could let us know when the module has been released, we would ALL appreciate it [so we can kill this thread =o)] See, they do listen =o) Okies off to take my partner to work now =o) Byeeee =o) Jon
Me too. Give the guys a break - they've done wonders for a small firm this size, and much better than many outfits 10 or 100 times bigger. They're supplying a catalogue of software longer than Bill Gates's tax return for the price of a decent night out. If they have a small support staff, and 40 letters on the theme 'pzop3 segfaults, help me', then they're going to send back a standard email as soon as someone's written one. What would you have them do? Take on 20 more people to write individually crafted emails and then send the wages bill to whom? It's cheap and it's excellent. Let's hear a bit more positive stuff, or queries that are aimed at getting specific solutions to specific problems or needs. 'I got up this morning and SuSE hadn't sent flowers to my girlfriend' is getting old. Best Fergus On Wednesday 08 May 2002 06:30, you wrote:
