RE: [SLE] Help - 6.3 - Can't boot off of anything!
Celia, Bad news I'm afraid, it seems like your PV has died, If I understand you correctly, you are seeing no output on your screen. If this is so, it looks like you have a hardware fault on your PC, it is most likely a problem with your motherboard or processor or video card. Is the PC making any sort of beep when you turn it on, if so how many beeps are repeated i.e. 3 beeps then a pause, then 3 beeps etc. If you are getting no beeps or a display on your monitor then the indication is the processor is just not executing the startup code contained in the BIOS ROM, this is way before it would even look for a disk to boot, so your installation of SuSE is not connected with the problem, it is just a coincidence. I installed Suse Linux 6.3 on one of my PC's several days ago. There was a warning sheet included with the distribution about problems installing LILO to the /boot partition. As suggested, I installed LILO to the MBR. Well - At present, I can't boot off of anything - Not even my (formerly) bootable cdrom, not from the bootable floppy. When I power cycle the machine, I hear a couple of seconds of action on the cdrom, and then nothing. The monitor remains black. I checked all connections - nothing seems loose. I don't remember if I rebooted the machine after my inital install. Perhaps the first time I shut the machine off was when I installed a network card a couple of days ago. It was at this time that I saw that I could not reboot the machine. I tried the network card in every PCI slot and still no boot was possible from the system, cdrom or floppy. Finally I removed the network card - Still no boot from disk, cdrom or floppy. Does anybody have any suggestions for me? If you have your motheboar manual with you read the section regarding clearing the cmos memory shortcircuiting it via a jumper. If you do not have the manual try to get hold to the websþte of the board maker it might help you there. I had a similar problems and cmps shortciruit helped. Togan's suggestion worked - once the CMOS was cleared, the machine was usable again. Apparently the addition of the network card messed up the interrupts.. (My brother had had a similar problem last year upon adding a new disk to my mom's computer and so he was helpful in getting mine back working late last night). Thanks very much!
