[opensuse] Suse sold to EQT

Little late to the party Larry? I mentioned this two days ago, and it was old news then. Either nobody knows or nobody dares say anything. At least not employed by suse. Probably updating resumes. I don't even know anything about the VCs that bought suse. I hope they got nothing else on the back burner, it would be nice to have suse be only a Linux company again. -- Sent from my Android phone with K-9 Mail. Well, funny math. The deal was announced yesterday, July 2nd and given that today is the 3rd I am not certain how you get to "I mentioned this two days" ago, anyway...
Either nobody knows or nobody dares say anything. At least not employed by suse. Probably updating resumes.
Well I cannot speak for everyone, but my resume will not be updated.

Well using Google to look up EQT is very helpful. Their website is reasonably informative about the company. You can find out for example that EQT established a new fund this year (2018) called EQT VIII. And from the press release about the acquisition you will learn that this fund, EQT VIII, is the potential new owner of SUSE. Potential new owner simply because the deal needs approval by MF shareholders and needs regulatory approval. All this is known publicly available information. And for those interested it is even possible to find the investors in this fund ;) . Also in the press releases is that SUSE will be an independent company.
I hope they got nothing else on the back burner, it would be nice to have suse be only a Linux company again.
And that's where this is going, as stated in the publicly available information. Later, Robert -- Robert Schweikert MAY THE SOURCE BE WITH YOU Distinguished Architect LINUX Team Lead Public Cloud rjschwei@suse.com IRC: robjo

It's been in financial rumours for at least two months, leaked ahead of announcement by 3 full days. I had MF stock, recently sold, and had been watching this for a while. I've never had any confidence in MF, and only acquired their stock via one of the prior reshuffling. -- Sent from my Android phone with K-9 Mail. EQT is backed by the Wallenberg group:
Quite a powerful family in Sweden. They own lots of things. As well as large holdings in major banks. Their ties to Ivar Kreuger have always been interesting. I have always heard that the Wallenberg family helped the Swedish government by keeping the many large companies Kreuger owned from failing, and thus sending the Swedish economy into ruin. In the process, they became very powerful. Of course they did keep the companies from failing, which was a good thing. -- Roger Oberholtzer -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I suspect that isn't correct. I would expect the funds to be legally separate entities from the management company. They have separate legal representation, for example. I suspect that SUSE is owned by EQT VIII and that EQT Fund Management Sarl is an adviser. I believe my suspicions are confirmed by the ownership diagram on p41 of last year's annual review.

For what it is worth, it is quite common to create "straw-man" entities to facilitate acquisitions and mergers. When then dust settles, the important point is who owns a controlling interest in whatever the ultimate owner-entity is. EQT funds usually run for 10 years. Acquisitions take place usually in the first 5 years and divestiture takes place in the second half of the life of the fund, information readily available from the EQT site. I know, I know, this gives people probably 5 years to speculate what might come next. But speculation is not really helpful, so please do that on some other list or on your own time.

Not only is your nonsense FUD, it's grossly factually incorrect Micro Focus bought all of the Attachmate Group (including Novell, Attachmate, SUSE, and NetIQ) for $1.2billion in 2014 The details of the deal valued the whole business (Micro Focus PLUS the Attachmate group) at $2.35billion https://www.ft.com/content/441b350e-3cf9-11e4-a2ab-00144feabdc0 The new deal values SUSE, alone, without Micro Focus, Attachmate, Novell, NetIQ and everything else Micro Focus has acquired since then, at $2.5billion Or to put it more bluntly, SUSE alone today is worth more money than the whole of Micro Focus and all of it's acquisitions in 2014. Ah. I received a notice on my mail server that yet another junk mail from Patrick was auto-redirected to the Black Hole account. Your response shows me what the noise was. I agree completely with the point you make here, as the other noise continues despite Richard, Simon, and others having already adequately explained what is going on and giving us the reassurances we need. A good plan, Richard and Simon, so continue on that path, with support from previous Board Members and their insights. And, thanks for passing the official reassurances on to us. No more need to argue about who does or does not "own" the bank account that does not (yet) exist, nor any more of this silliness about "is openSUSE going to be shafted and/or implode?". The answers have already been given, the path ahead is defined, and the people taking care of this for us should not have to waste any more time re-explaining it when they could instead be constructively working on the ideas. -- -Gerry Makaro openSUSE Member openSUSE Forum Moderator openSUSE Contributor aka Fraser_Bell on the Forums, OBS, IRC, and mail at openSUSE.org Fraser-Bell on Github -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
