hi all, I have recently migrated to SuSE. I have SuSE 9.1 running on my comp. I am in a research group and I need to use a network printer that has it's own ip address. I tried to configure using the Printers option in Start menu > Utilities > Printing > Printers. The first time I invoked this menu the Configure - Printing Manager window came up and said that it's 'trying to configure the printers', or something similar to this. I actually had no printers attached to my computer. This was the first time I invoked. I clicked on the Add menu in the Printing Manager window, a wizard came up in which it asked me select one of the available printer options, but I couldn't select any of these because everything was in grey and none of them were active. The forward button was active, so when I pressed the forward button it wouldn't go forward, but say that I had to select one of the options, which I couldn't as none of them was active. So I closed the wizard using the 'close' button with the intention of starting all over again. That's it. After this I tried to invoke the Printing Manager again from the Start Menu > Utilities > .... but it's even starting up. It shows up this window Configure - Printing Manager which doesn't respond to anything, doesn't even close if use the x button on the window. When I try to close the window from the taskbar, it gives me the follwing message: 'Window with title "Configure - Printing Manager" is not responding. This window belongs to application kcmshell (PID=6556, hostname=localhost). Do you wish to terminate this application? (All unsaved data in this application will be lost.)' After this I even rebooted system thinking that the problem would clear up, but to no avail. Can anyone help in resolving this problem? Not only with this, but sometimes this kind of thing happens with someother applications also. Like when I try to Klipper contents it also hangs like this. I either have to kill this, or close it like I did above with the Printing Manager. It would be nice if someone can tell me what this cupsd and lp processes that are running in the background. They come up all of a sudden when I invoke top. I am in a computational chem. gp. So my comp is my life blood. These two processes take up a lot of memory, so what I have been doing is to kill these processes whenever they come up. Am I harming the system? Does this have anything to with the above problem with the Printing Manager? Sorry for such a long mail. Couldn't help it. Thanks for any help and patience. Regards, Chaitanya. hi,
I tried using Yast. I invoked Yast > Hardware >
Printer for configuring the printer. It goes till
50%(loading current settings) and hangs. I am giving
the info from the file /var/log/Yast2. I think the
last few lines should help. I have put them again here
for convenience. Is the problem with parsing the file
/var/lib/Yast2/printers? I checked this file. It is
empty.

I concur with what Ken said. You might have some other program (another yast sesion, whatever) accessing the rpm database at that moment. Or you might be trying to be using yast without being root. Also, the recomendation to reinstall cups sounds correct. Make sure you have everything up to date using YOU. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
hi,
I reinstalled cupsd and also rebuilt the rpm database
as suggested by Ken.
Now I started the printer configuration using the
command $ yast2 printer. Still it hangs. It says that
the rpm database is still blocked. I am sure that no
application usig the rpm database is running when I
invoked 'yast2 printer'. I have been used Synaptic
some time in the past. During this time I remember
that I invoked both Synaptic and Yast at the same
time. Most of the times Synaptic didn't behave as
expected and I had to kill the process, if this causes
any problems to the access to the rpm db.
Does rpm create any lock files or something like that?
I am giving the following info from
/var/log/Yast2/y2log file.

'(/)/var/lib/rpm' I concur with what Ken said. You might have some
other program (another
yast sesion, whatever) accessing the rpm database at
that moment. Or you
might be trying to be using yast without being root. Also, the recomendation to reinstall cups sounds
correct. Make sure you
have everything up to date using YOU. --

Right, I guessed that to.
First do sux
Better use "sux -". -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

Although you can use YaST to configure a printer going through the menus using PrintManager will work. Did you add a "printer admin" first? You need to add an admin using lppasswd -a <username> username can be any name but you need to add one first as the root user. Also check if the PrinterManager window has an administrator button. If it does you will need to push that button first in order to add a printer. If you still have problems let us know. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

Ya I did add a user using the following command lppasswd -a pringadmin and then gave the passwd. No probs. I invoked the Print Manager again. But still the same problem, as given in the original mail. It still hangs.
Also check if the PrinterManager window has an administrator button. If it does you will need to push that button first in order to add a printer.
I didn't see any button for the administrator on the window. I guess usually the appl asks for the passwd before you can use it, right? Correct me if I am wrong.
If you still have problems let us know.
Kindly go through the other mail I sent to the list regarding the messages in the log of Yast2. I think that may help. Regards, Chaitanya. Indian Inst. of Science. http://www.iisc.ernet.in __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Make Yahoo! your home page http://www.yahoo.com/r/hs

Try re-installing the cups software, especially the ppd rpm. It sounds like that rpm didn't get installed correctly. You can do this by going into YaST add/remove software, search for cups and change the checkmark on the cups packages to a "Z" symbol. This will tell YaST to re-install that package. From the previous errors it appears that there are no ppd definitions installed. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

One other thing, make sure that no other program has the rpm database in use. It appears that something has it open from the error: 2005-04-17 15:48:05 <2> achala(7708) [librpmDb] librpmDb.cc(D):560 No database access: ERROR(InstTarget:E_RpmDB_access_block ed) Or the rpm database may need to be rebuilt: rpm --rebuilddb will rebuild the database. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

I believe you can only configure there the printers already setup by the administrator (ie, you). Use Yast. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
