However, check the link provided for the DirectPC and look at the SERVICE pricing: <A HREF="http://www.sat-more.com/direcpc.htm"><A HREF="http://www.sat-more.com/direcpc.htm</A">http://www.sat-more.com/direcpc.htm</A</A>>. For 200 hours of online time the price is $129.99/month. 100 hours is $49.99/month and 25 hours a month is $29.99/month. Uplink connects are via modem at traditional speeds, downlink speeds are NOT guaranteed at 400kps as I recall when I reviewed the packages from DirectPC previously, more like a guarantee of "approximately" 100kps. In simpler terms, for performance reasons I'll stick with my ISDN, current price is 300 hours per B channel at $84.00/month. You are right and for some users this won't be a good option. But, let me give you my scenario. 1. I live in a VERY rural part of the country; ISDN, ADLS and cable modems are not in the very near future here, and for the place that has ISDN close by, the cost is WAY more than you are paying. 2. Because I can get a PUSH of news and Web from Hughes without counting against my useage hours, then I don't need more than 100 hours a month. 3. I can drop the second phone line I have just for internet access. This costs me about $25 per month with taxes and access fees, plus a useage sensitive charge on a per call and sometimes a per minute basis. I have looked over a few bills and it looks like it is costing me nearly the $35 it will cost to have up to 400K speed. So, for me, it is an excellent alternative. For others, YMMV. Lloyd
I know this is off-topic, but I thought some might find this of interest. One of our local dealers is selling Hughes DirecPC for $49.95. This is a complete set up. PCI card, antenna and all. No service obligation or anything is required to get this. It comes with W95 and W/NT software, v2.0x, so it is the latest.
I have NEVER seen this at this low a price. I bought mine last night and will install sometime over the holiday. They say the pricing is good until Christmas.
There is Linux software available from a third party, although I don't know who.
If you are interested look at www.mychoice.net
