[opensuse] locate ?
Hi. While ago I always used the locate command to find instances I want to look for on my system. Now it doesn't work anylonger. What's the reason ? I have used the find command since I recognized the lack. Is it ok or am I missing anything ? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Most likely the db haven't been built- IIRC is has been disabled by default for quite some time now. Check your values in /etc/sysconfig/locate. You might want to run updatedb manually for now if you don't want to wait for the cron job to kick in. Charles

Thanks Charles. I have run updatedb since a while too, but this has not given me the opportunity. As you probably have seen, I got it to work. Here's the output of the command after I added an "e" :-) ls /var/lib/locatedb /var/lib/locatedb Erik -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Now you should investigate why the cron job is not kicking in. Is cron running? If it is, try rerunning SUSEConfig. Charles

I had not the idea to do, cause I didn't knew how to do it to see what is/was wrong. Now I have learned, that opensue ml is mostly intended for people with more knowledge than I have. Could you simply run the commands I sugested,, and copy here the output? Just copy paste the following lines into a terminal, one by one: ls -l /etc/cron.daily/suse.de-updatedb cat /etc/sysconfig/locate | egrep -v "^[[:space:]]*$|^#" cat /etc/sysconfig/cron | egrep -v "^[[:space:]]*$|^#" These three commands do not change anything, they just print the configuration files witout the comments.

While ago I always used the locate command to find instances I want to look for on my system. Now it doesn't work anylonger.
You mean it stopped working, or you installed a new system and it's not there now?
What's the reason ?
Which thousand would you prefer?
I have used the find command since I recognized the lack.
rather heavy handed substitute.
Is it ok or am I missing anything ?
it is "ok", and you may or may not be missing anything. Do you have aroundtuit? If not you *are* missing something. ps: suspecting you have a new install, did you install findutils-locate as it is not installed w/o direction? ps2: You ask a lot w/o giving many details. I hear a grinding sound when I apply the brakes on my vehicle. I mean, that I recognized once under 10.3, that it didn't work. But as you probably have read, I got the manually updatedb advice. Now it works.

yes 11.0 but b4 10.3, but it works now.

I try to make my askings as short as possible. Don't really understand that about the meaning of " the grinding .." But many do understand what I mean, and that's the case. a comendable trait, but "short as possible" implies that your askings still include that "which is necessary to define your 'askings'". And you did *not*!
Don't really understand that about the meaning of " the grinding .."
you have *never* heard a grinding sound when brakes were applied?
But many do understand what I mean, and that's the case.
No, many guessed and then tried to answer. They did not *understand.
It can be difficult to write so all understand what is written.
Very true, but in the best interests of the asker to attempt to do so. -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Obviously you mean in general I think. Why haven't you said that before. I have been here since many years?

Yes I have, but this time you mean not that precisely.
But many do understand what I mean, and that's the case.
No, many guessed and then tried to answer. They did not *understand.
Have they told you that ?.

Is it ok or am I missing anything ? You probably forgot to install it. I think the package is called find-utils or similar.

Thanks James for you reply. It was installed, but there were things I have forgotten to do I have learned from Carlos and Patrick. Erik -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hello: In pre-openSUSE 11.0 versions findutils-locate package was a separeted package. Is it installed on your system? Cheers, IG VÁSÁROLNA? SEGÍTÜNK!
