I vaguely remember this problem being discussed earlier this year ... I ran YOU & apt-get upgrade successfully last night but since then I have not been able to start a KDE session. Other desktop environments appear to start ok (Gnome, XFCE, Enlightenment) but the default & KDE sessions just restart the Xserver. I have removed all /tmp/kde* files & directories and all symbolic links from ~/.kde/ - is there more to be done in this sequence - or do I need to restore certain files that have been overwritten by the update -- Regards, Sylvanus A. No KDE, no Gnome ... shit !!!! Well, I went back to runlevel 3, logged in and brought up KDE manually, this still worked: # init 3 # startx --kde Then I looked in the archives of this great list, and found the following: On Friday 23 August 2002 09:44, Frederik Vos wrote:

Did this, and now, everything is back to normal. Hope this helps in case anyone else will be affected by this problem. Cheers ... Wolfi ============================================= mailto:wolfi_z@gmx.net
Fix found in list archives (see below) Thanks to all who replied
Thanks Ben. Am now firmly back at runlevel 5.
Just a note that I have ~/.kde1 and ~/.kde2 directories too and had to remove the symlinks from them also. Can I get rid of these directories? Steve.
