gcc 3.2x segfoualt problem with 8.1&AthlonXP/VIAKT266A
Hi, I am continuosly have gcc segfault problems with SuSE 8.1 (updated with latest RPMs from SuSE update ftp), latest SuSE kernel which contains fix for buggy VIA South Bridge (also from mentioned location), and gcc 3.2-46 from /projects. Small packages usually compile fine, but larger ones (e.g. quanta and especially kernel) randomly abort with message "internal error - segmentation fault". However, it is possible to continue compilation further with random success. I did all type of troubleshooting (I have even replaced RAM and reinstalled SuSE from scratch). Unfortunately, it did not help. Everything else seem to work fine (XFree in linux, WinXP with games, etc.), except gcc. I have this hardware: Athlon XP 1600, 512 MB DDR RAM (Kingston), Chaintech 7VJDA m/b (VIA KT 266A chipset), latest BIOS update, 40 GB 7200 rpm Maxtor HD. CPU temperature is very low, I have checked it. May be I have missed some packages which gcc would like to be installed, and which are not listed in RPM dependency? Thanks in advance for any suggestion. ********************************************* * Best Regards --- Andrei Verovski * * Personal Home Page * http://snow.prohosting.com/guru4mac * Mac, Linux, DTP, Development, IT WEB Site *********************************************

Andrei, I don't know if this is your problem or not, but I suspect it might have a bearing on it. I just recently experienced something like what you described and finally run it down to faulty QT devel files. Look at all your QT files to see if you have any -86 builds there. These come from the SuSE KDE update file page, which are buggy. If so, replace those with the files from your 8.1 disc. I think your problems might begin to disappear after that. I battled with that for about a half day, before becoming completely frustrated and just replacing all my QT files with the original 8.1 supplied ones. Didn't have a moments problem compiling after that. I then updated with the the files in the "update" directory for 8.1 and compile still functions without a hitch. Dear Patrick, Thank you very much for suggestion. The problem is that gcc 3.2x segfault problem occurs randomly with ANY software (i.e. kernel), which do not use QT headers. On Saturday, December 14, 2002, at 07:12 PM, PL O'Smith wrote:
