[opensuse] Nvidia drivers for 13.1
Does anyone know when there will be a repository with the nvidia drivers available for 13.1? Cheers Dx -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

No, but I'm also waiting for it. I'm back to using Nouveau, complete with lousy performance. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Unfortunately, nouveau is a non-starter for me as I make extensive use of 3D graphics applications (blender, primarily) and need the full functionality and CUDA processing. I've opened a bugzilla: 853009 but have no confidence that they will appear any time soon... This seems to be a serious drawback if 13.1 is to be made evergreen Dx -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

This might be (relatively) OK for *me* provided the CUDA modules get set up correctly (which has been a significant issue in the past) but not at all for the non-technical friends I help with support... It's not just a matter of whether they work - I'm part of a group of CGI artists, and as such I have to support the non-technical members. It's hard enough keeping several systems updated with oS and ancillary software. Adding the complication of manual nvidia driver installation to the mix is simply not practical. This is a shame, since I was hoping to bring all the machines to 13.1 so everyone was using the same distro version and I could then semi-automate a lot of the admin. We are a group of hobbyists, and I'm talking about a wide range of different systems which their owners also use for their other non 3d art uses, some dual-booting with various versions of Windows. If we were able to afford dedicated machines then I'd make sure they were all identical and your cloning solution would be more viable (but since we are spread over South East London and have varying ISP bandwidth and speed caps would be logistically awkward.) The issue only arrises due to the lack of the OBS nvidia repository. You need to remember that very few 'real world' use cases for computers are optimal (or even straightforward.) The proprietary driver is necessary to get usable performance from 3D graphics programs. The nouveau driver's performance is abysmal - when sculpting or texture painting a 3d mesh it stutters and there is an update delay which makes the tools unusable. Luckily, señor Teodori has pointed me in the direction of the bumblebee repo which seems to be suitable. Well, no... they have a perfectly functional standard driver in the repo as it happens - It seems strange that they (and it appears several others in their home: repos) can manage to get it packaged, but there is no plain nvidia repo available... Those repos do not contain the compiled binary drivers, you have to do that yourself via dkms. That's why it is legal to have them on the buildservice. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 12.3 x86_64 "Dartmouth" at Telcontar)

And are the ones in the repos for 12.3 and prior therefore not legal? The info in the repo says quite clearly they are packaged and distributed by openSUSE and hosted on an nvidia server "...as a curtesy..." -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
You are wrong Nvidia drivers from that repo do not depend on bumblebee and can be used on all nvidia based systems. It is what I usually do in my lab, on any linux machine. Thank to dkms, I can use those drivers on any compatible kernel version. For instance I am using kernel 3.12.2. Any time you upgrade the kernel, when rebooting the modules are rebuilt and loaded, no need to manually reinstall the drivers. On Tue, Dec 3, 2013 at 5:16 AM, Carlos E. There are no promises given in that bug. Stefan only wrote that he's pushed them to Nvidia. Complain to Nvidia that they haven't yet published them. Philipp -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I have run into a similar problem on my 64 bit system. Nvidia provides now drivers and a patch for newer Linux kernels (i.e. 3.11). That is related to your video card version. I have downloaded the wrong driver, but when running the install script you are told which driver you need for your specific card. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I am not sure I have understood your question, yes, I am running a 64 bit system. x11-video-nvidia-32bit is a compatibility package needed if you want to run a 32 bit application. I usually install it. The advantage of the dkms solution is that when the kernel is updated, at the first reboot nvidia kernel module is rebuilt.
