[opensuse] Tor browser install fails on Leap 42.1
I'm trying to install the Tor browser on Leap 42.1 I went to https://software.opensuse.org/package/torbrowser-launcher and that suggests https://software.opensuse.org/ymp/devel:languages:python/openSUSE_Leap_42.1/torbrowser-launcher.ymp?base=openSUSE%3ALeap%3A42.1&query=torbrowser-launcher as the best place to get the software. I installed that and when I click on the menu entry for Tor Browser, I get a small dialog titled Tor Browser that says it is installing the browser and then says (GRR! why is it yet another dialog that won't let you copy text!) SIGNATURE VERIFICATION FAILED! It says the same thing if I download again, so I suspect the problem is not a dodgy download. There are no hints as to where to look for more diagnostics. Anybody know how to get it working? Cheers, Dave -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I don't think I do, but perhaps I'm mistaken. A reference to something that explains what you mean and why I would want to do it would be helpful.

There is a good explanation on the website I gave you but well. There are several reasons why a person wishes to use tor a) less tracking for commercial reasons b) less tracking from your government c) you live in a country that censors the internet if your use is are probably well off with a package of the distribution. But if your usecase is b or c it is pointless IMO. If the government forces the person who creates the package to alter it, or if it substitutes the script, it may give you a false security. What do you know about build service? How many developer have access to that repo? If you feel confident and you can judge the risk fine. I would not be able to evaluate that risk. So IF I would install the tor browser bundle I would use the original page of the project, Check for good the signatures taking care that the https is OK and then control via the gpg keys I imported and checked the integrity of the packages, in a clean system, with gpg in a console with gpg --verify exactly as they propose it. If you do not want to use it all the time, you are living in a free country and you do not have the intention to synchronize your bookmarks all the time, then maybe installing tor-package from the regular repos (not build service) and just setting the proxy, would allow you to use the same browser for normal ways and for torrified browsing. Admittedly the settings of the bundle are saver. But that is why I was asking myself about your motivation. YMMV. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

torbrowser-launcher does exactly that - it connects to tor.org on the first time and downloads tor browser from this site. So the only extra bonus is menu entry that you can also create yourself. One difference may be that the openSUSE rpm would be available to all users of the system. I have installed the tor bundle previously, and the binary is inside my home. And it is not updated automatically, I have version 5.5.1 There has been an disruption of the version. The current one is way ahead, since two versions the bundle proposes to update through a secure channel. It works well, you should update with the most recent binary. The current bundle checks if a new version is available and warns you before browsing. I am using the latest alfa 7 hardened. Came out about two days ago.

Cheers, Dave Yes. Did you actually import the gpg signature from the gpg team that currently signs the browser, controlled it and gave it trust? If no the signature verification will fail because he has no signature to do gpg verify. The program sais this also in the description that you read before you installed it: Verifies Tor Browser's signature for you, to ensure the version you downloaded was cryptographically signed by Tor developers and was not tampered with

No, it isn't available in any of the standard repositories. The only version shown is the one I installed.
Ah, interesting - it's available in 42.2, but not for 42.1.
Forgot to say - if I were you I would just use the one from 42.2.
Why not: if I were you I'd branch it in OBS and build one for 42.1 ?
Because I very much hope that if I did that the result wouldn't end up in the standard repositories, and somebody has already built one in a non-standard place so why build another.
Plus as various people have said in various different ways, why does it exist at all? Why not just install from torproject?
Well, isn't that the whole reason we build a distro - to help people who are less Linux-literate.
Except this particular package doesn't help. A wiki page that pointed people to the securityinabox page would be more helpful, IMHO. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I'm trying to install the Tor browser on Leap 42.1
I went to https://software.opensuse.org/package/torbrowser-launcher and that suggests https://software.opensuse.org/ymp/devel:languages:python/openSUSE_Leap_42.1/torbrowser-launcher.ymp?base=openSUSE%3ALeap%3A42.1&query=torbrowser-launcher as the best place to get the software.
Cheers, Dave
I try generally to always stick to packages from OBS but in the case of tor I make an exception. I downloaded the tor browser bundle direct from the website, I believe it comes as a tar.gz package. Unpack that (can go anywhere in your home directory structure, unless you want it available to all users in which case stick it in /opt or somewhere) and simply click on the start-tor-browser launcher. It then prompts to update when running and does that standalone without requiring further package administration or new downloads. Very easy. Getting the OBS package doesn't offer any advantages in this case from what I can see. I see that the tar package I downloaded was dated from two years ago, but it's kept itself updated since then (under oS 13.1). In the past I did it differently, the method of torifying a regular browser. I did that with Firefox, Konqueror and then Opera. Whilst there are some advantages to doing that, it can also be quite fiddly, especially if you use that same browser for other regular browsing, you have to keep changing settings to reroute via a proxy. In my own case it was even more complicated as I was using Vidalia to pick a country-specific exit node and the whole process at the time was complicated. I don't recommend that unless you have some specific requirements. gumb -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Thanks for the helpful comments. I downloaded and installed it from torproject in the end. The best explanation I've found is: https://securityinabox.org/en/guide/torbrowser/linux/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

It verifies signature with key that is included in package as /usr/share/torbrowser-launcher/tor-browser-developers.asc. Apparently this key is outdated.
