Well, you have to look at why they are using it. If you look at the storage solutions used by these big companies, there are no drivers for linux. Redhat write drivers for hardware, that means redhat is the only dist that WILL work on their systems. I think if SUSE had a guy writing drivers and creating Install bootdisks that would allow people to install SUSE on systems with RAID controllers they would have a lot more customers. I think SuSE does write drivers. Several people have commented to me that they went to SuSE because they needed the drivers for their stuff. One of the main X developers is on SuSEs payroll. Besides, since it's open source, any of these big guys could put a small team of programmers on a driver for a couple of weeks. No, there's more to this Red Hat revolution than meets the eye.

This means that Linux = RedHat for the most people, and where will that put SuSE? Alone in the dark?

Can anyone either confirm or deny with certainty that installing the opatch.rpm located at <A HREF="ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/SuSE-Linux/suse_update/S.u.S.E.-5.3/a1/opatch.rpm</A">ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/SuSE-Linux/suse_update/S.u.S.E.-5.3/a1/opatch.rpm</A> gives one full glibc support? Is this basically the same "upgrade/addition" that would come if I installed 6.0? If not, why not, and should I then wait for 6.0? thanks, chris ------------------------------------------ E-Mail: Chris Martin <camst65@pitt.edu> Date: 28-Jan-99 Time: 12:44:17 ** Powered by SuSE Linux. No, it is not the same. This package was mainly intended for people who wish to run Oracle on 5.3. It contains the glibc2 libraries that Red Hat uses. If you apply this package to 5.3, you may run into trouble when upgrading to 6.0. THanks. I have asked this very question---about which I would think there would be much interest given the glibc stuff---and you were the first person to give me any answer. I guess I should just wait for 6.0. Will there be a standard/easy, or at least straight-forward, upgrade from 5.3 to 6.0? chris On 29-Jan-99 Lenz Grimmer wrote:
