[opensuse] Opensuse 12.3 - device manager
hi Since installing 12.3, everytime i logon, device manager pops up and presents me with a 0B removable media (has floppy disk icon) and 3 options on how to deal with it. I don't actually have a floppy disk drive but i think there is a socket on the motherboard for one if i decided to regress.... Its not a problem but its a little annoying - does anyone have any ideas how to stop it happening? regards Ian -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Probably deactivating floppy support in the BIOS would work. Have a nice day, Berny -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

There is apparently some change either in kernel or in how kernel modules are loaded in 12.3. Users also suddenly started to report that YaST2 bootloader hangs in 12.3 on a system where 12.2 worked. Deactivating floppy controller fixed it as well. Personally I think it warrants bug report to investigate what's going on. But this requires matching hardware *and* both 12.2 and 12.3 on it to be able to compare ... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

When i installed 12.3 the "probing file systems" bit took about 15/20 minutes to get through. I thought it was something to do with the SSD i have as the first disk, maybe it was the Floppy Disk causing the problems. I'll boot the 12.3 ISO again and see if it gets quicker now the floppy is disabled

Yesterday I tried to read a floppy on this 12.1 install. The kernel OOPsed and "mount" locked. Had to kill nine it. It is possible that kernel code to read floppies is broken currently. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. It came to attention late in 12.2 devel cycle, about the time it was originally scheduled for release: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=773058 -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." This is a BIOS bug but I doubt bios vendors will ever fix this. other than disabling the floppy drive in the bios.. blacklisting the floppy driver might also work. It is a really annoying considering that no one sane will ever use a floppy drive anymore. kernel-desktop should probably just ship with this thing disabled. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

One need not be sane to run openSUSE on a PC. :-) More than 75% of the PCs I run Linux on have working floppy drives, including the two I run 24/7. They probably get used more often than the OM drives. I most often use them to save logs from failed test (Cauldron/Cooker/Factory/Rawhide) installations, and for booting DOS, like to upgrade a BIOS, diagnose a possible HD failure, or initialize a virgin HD. USB is a nuisance because the media provide no room to write anything useful on. If it fits a floppy, that's what I use instead of USB, assuming no available network. Besides all that, I have lots of floppies in boxes made to fit and store. Sticks have to be bought, and have non-uniform storage needs. :-p -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." You had me until this:

So you're able to get more data onto a 1.44 MB floppy disk than you can a USB stick of gigabytes in size? How do you manage to accomplish this? Is there some other way to interpret what you've said here? -- Chris -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Chris, He's talking about physical labels and a physical pen. I use little tie wraps and manilla tags: http://www.etsy.com/listing/40531027/100-large-manila-hang-tags-sz-5 I like big tags, so the ones I use are about half the size of a floppy. I
use APLI Ref 7011 myself :-) I'd prefer some type of plastic tags, but did not find any, and the shop keepers do not even know what I'm asking for till I describe that I want to label pendrives. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. Carlos E. R It would help if the manufacturers of the thumb drives would include a little piece of plastic with a hole in it, so as to attach some kind of tag. I have a Data Traveler 200 that has that feature, but my other drives don't. (I never thought of tags on a tether, but it would work. I've been cutting out pieces of Avery label and pasting them on.) Of course, the dangling tag would make the drive a bit clumsy. . . .

Probably those sentences needed a paragraph break. Write the outside, e.g. with a pen, to know what the media was/is used for, without having to mount it. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Billions were made. My closets and drawers. Freecycle. Garage sales. Yard sales. Estate sales. Goodwill. Retail store inventories. Craigslist. Many of the same sources from which one can get old puters to refurb.

"Now", a keyword. Non-exclusive would be another apt descriptor. It was not always thus.
