[opensuse] sax2-tools on 11.3
Could somebody tell me what the package sax2-tools does on my 11.3 system? It is a 11.3 package and promises to supply sax2. Up to now I am still struggling with the permanent setting of my resolution and refresh rate and are distressed to have a sax2 package that does not seem to work. Why is it anyhow on offer? -- Linux User 183145 using LXDE on a Pentium IV , powered by openSUSE 11.3 (i586) Kernel: 2.6.34-12-default LXDE WM & KDE Development Platform: 4.4.93 (KDE 4.4.93 (KDE 4.5 >= 20100713)) 12:31pm up 2:44, 2 users, load average: 0.12, 0.72, 0.79 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

It only has some tools that AFAIR sax used to do its work, e.g. calculating modelines. It does not offer sax2. Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I haven't found sax2 usable since 10.3. For starters try starting X with NO xorg.conf. Just 'sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.save' and then try starting X again. X has been able to set its own defaults for the past couple of years. Also ATI and nvidia have there own initial setup programs to set xorg.conf defaults like (from memory: aticonfig --initial and nvidia-xconfig) To create your own modelines use 'gtf' (general timing frequencies). It come with: xorg-x11-server-7.5_1.8.0-9.4.i586 Then if you need a modeline for 1920x1200 with a 60Hz refresh, just do: 11:18 zephyr:/home/backup/rpms/suse11.3> gtf 1920 1200 60 # 1920x1200 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 74.52 kHz; pclk: 193.16 MHz Modeline "1920x1200_60.00" 193.16 1920 2048 2256 2592 1200 1201 1204 1242 -HSync +Vsync When you get a display started, you tweak it to fit your monitor with 'xvidtune'. It's part of: xorg-x11-7.5-11.3.i586 Just fire it up and make the adjustments you line and it will save the proper modeline, etc. (you can also have it display the current modeline when it is running IIRC) Good Luck :p -- David C.
