[opensuse] Do I have an m2 SSD slot?
Dear all, I have an ASUS K501 UX laptop. Since the K501 UB model has an m2 slot, I suspect this one also has. But how can I decide it from command line, without opening up the box? https://www.asus.com/Laptops/K501UX/specifications/ says m2 sata, probably in addition of standard sata for hdd disks (can hold also a sata ssd) only the invoice can say what is in the box, but the interface should be there If the m2 slot is used, hwinfo --disk will show you the brand/model name of the disk. I don't know how to get the interface info :-( jdd -- http://dodin.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I took that as listing the options available from the manufacturer. I looked around a bit for more complete information than ASUS lists, but didn't find any. It should still be possible to replace the manufacturer-installed drive with something a little more practical, ie. larger. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I have a 1TB HDD, it is sufficient for me. With a separate drive for data storage, a 256 GB SSD will be more than enough for the operating system and all your applications software, plus a decent-sized swap partition. I don't think anyone has mentioned the SSD form factor for this computer; it is the 2280. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

2280 is the longer allowed (numbers are size: width + lengh), smaller ones fit also jdd -- http://dodin.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I have a computer with sata & msata slots. I had two disks for long, because the main hdd disk was difficult to change, but finally I setup one ssd and I'm glad with it recently I ordered this one, as 1Tb ssd: https://fr.aliexpress.com/item/32820373332.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.39ac6c... no need to cope with two disks jdd -- http://dodin.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

if there is a disk in the m2 slot, it can be identified (hwinfo) and so the manufacturer will say the kind. but is it possible to list *unused* slots? M2, msata, are only mechanically different slots, is there a way to know which is what from Linux? I know for sure that some computers, cheap version, lack some mechanical ports. I recently openned one that had only one ram slot, when the place for the second slot was clearly visible on the mobo :-( for the OP: I have a similar (but older) Asus computer. It's not too difficult to open, only screws to remove all around and all is visible. Seems to be the same on yours. if none is blocked by a waranty sticker, you can open to look in. some examples as clues: https://www.culte.org/pmwiki/?n=Rubriques.CommentDMonterUnPCPortable thanks jdd -- http://dodin.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Well, it is well over warranty, some 5 years old. If there exists the than it is empty. same I mine (N550JK) If there exists the than it is empty. yes, I would like to be able to see if there is an empty slot. These very small slots are often hidden :-) I have only one HDD installed.I am looking at the

nope. You have NGFF/sata ones, nearly identical with usual sata, size excepted, and NVME PCIe, much faster ones. Not compatibles, all m2, may even have the same connector. Some computers may have both interfaces in the same connector, but I never had seen one. jdd -- http://dodin.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yep, my mobo uses one connector that supports a 2242/2260/2280/22110 M keyed card. This is a Ryzen board with the M.2 controller on the CPU not the chipset and it supports either PCIe 3.0 x4 (so NVME) or SATA 3.0 SSD's, on an internal switch. Note that if your older board does not support PCIe 3.0 or higher, then NVME is not supported and your SSD will use the much slower AHCI. I think that hwinfo --pci can see the device, but it is very difficult to identify unless the M.2 is populated. On my machine, it is identified as a "bridge" type device under the CPU (not the chipset) providing an "internal PCIe bridge". If populated, hwinfo --storage should show it using either the ahci (sata or older pcie) or nvme driver. Only the manual/specs can tell you the interfaces and form factors supported. --dg -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
