250+GB drives reliability

** "from the bottom of my heart, off the coast of Carolina, after one or two false starts ** I'm kinda getting the feeling you guys aren't really too chuffed about the way these drives last. I wonder if that is why they are so , um... inexpensive at lest when compared to the price of the largest available scsi drives. SO I wonder about getting a USB or Firewire one for backups perhaps or to carry a clone from box to box... ( ot maybe to plug into a business room's computer in order to keep my files from getting spilled out onto an Xp drive. ( I'm half convinced that is how my email password at Bellsouth was picked up. Not completely but it almost makes more sense that some curious person would bother to download my email off the server. It would have been smarter , were they looking for CC numbers or the like to leave it there so I didn't find out someone was reading my email. Can you say encryption??? Well no, apparently, most windows clients should do it but to get someone to encrypt or accept encrypted email is like pulling teath. Still, is the general consensus that these huge drives aren't really reliable for longer than say 1.6 years? and by two full years of service one could expect a failure? -- j -- nemo me impune lacessit 'Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? We have a few Maxtor and a few Hitachi. We have had the Maxtor ones longer... Over 3 years going 24/7. (4 200 gig and 2 250 gig) The only drives we have die are Western Digital (one 120 gig is out now for warrantee replacement) and a "deathstar"... As far as USB or firewire drives... What do you think are in those enclosures? (Hint-not scsi) -- Thanks, George Failure is not an option with Microsoft; it's bundled with the software!

yeah, I knew that <G> I was looking for exactly what you said, the best drives at that size you tried and how long before the failure that most seem to be talking about. IF it's 3years or more, and the prices stay down it's probably even sensible to replace them when they die. As I said there aren't any big scsi drives , unless you are talking about what the Feds can afford <G> , well, okay what they can and do pay for. Aford, is probably not the correct word there. -- j -- nemo me impune lacessit 'Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? '

I have switched to seagate drives myself, not had them quiet a year yet but not had any of them fail like i did with western digital drives, Have several from 80 g up to 200 g running in my workstations an server here at work. They seem to be pretty reliable so far for me here.

Mine didn't totally die- It just started to wine... Loud- then louder - then louder... You know, that "spun bearing" sound... Just before they stop. Their first answer was "did you run any disk utilities on it yet". (idiot!) Oh, and mine went about 1 1/2 years. Had a 3 year warrantee. -- Thanks, George Suppose you were an idiot and suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself. Mark Twain

Data-recovery is part of my job here. From my observations, Maxtor drives are most likely to crash or burn! I know some maxtor models which are irrevocably condemned to fail! I found Western Digital and Seagate have the best reliability. My be different qualities from region to region? WD hards being sold here (Iran) are manufactured in Malasya. In my opinion: Quietest = Maxtor Most reliable = Western, Seagate Coldest = Fujitsu Fastest = ? (depends on model) Best Regards, Bahram Alinezhad, Rudehen, Tehran, Iran. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Meet the all-new My Yahoo! - Try it today! http://my.yahoo.com

-- j -- nemo me impune lacessit 'Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? ' I find the drives run very very hot. (I've actually burned my finger touching one!). I insist on putting a fan on each one. The temperatures sink dramatically (cool when touched, notice my empirical methods here?).
I think this helps but... It's not been 3 years yet... So I really can't say. What I can say is this with 10 or so drives, and in over 1.5 years, I've yet to loose one with a fan on it. Jerry

As Brand I use what ever is cheapest at the moment. I've only just started buying 200giga, as I watch carefully the $pgb (dollar per GigaByte) curve, and only now have the 200gb drives dropped from the "New technology" exponential end of the curve. But then again that is in Switzerland. You guys in USA get unbelievable deals, like my brother who got 120giga drives for 30$ ea. (One per household) at fry's. So the 1.5 year old drives are 80g and 120g. I put 3 to a box, 2 in software raid, and the third (larger) as swap, Install, temp, and backup (using storebackup). Unfortunatetly, all the boxes are closed, (and most at clients). So I can only give you the ones on my own server. There are the oldest ones anyway: 2xWD800BB (must be at least 1.5 years old if not 2 or more) and 2 Maxtor 6Y120M0 (120g SATA) been running since 9.0 can out (now that is almost exactly one year)... As fans for the 80g, I have a home made special, (a case fan on a piece of bent metal, bolted to the bottom of the 2 drives, I blows over 2 drives, but requires open covers on the front of the case 8-( ) But I now use the disk fans as provided by my local pc-shop: "Just Cooler Pcs" HD-600, made in Taiwan.... It consists of a metal case you screw to the bottom of the drive. Messes with what ever is underneither but I like my tower cases anyway... Maybe someone can correct me but I thought I read that the newer drives require cooling..... Hope this bla helps someone! Jerry

In my experience all the new drives run very hot, really anything 80GB or larger. These days I always install a fan either blowing across the drive or use an attached heatsink/fan unit. I haven't had any reliability problems with the 80GB drives. I haven't run the larger drives long enough to tell yet. Jeff
