Hi Has anybody managed to get nmap v3.30 working in SuSE 9.0 as root? It appears to work fine as a normal user, but I get no response when running as root. I cannot obtain a response even from localhost - it reports that the host is down yet i can ping localhost with sucess. As a standard user, nmap correctly reports the open ports on my machine. I used nmap v3.00 under 8.2 without problems. Neil ________________________________________________________________________ This e-mail has been scanned for all viruses by Star Internet. I ran across the following somewhere.

Just a \"heads up\" to those of you using 9.0 Pro and running into issues
with running nmap as root:
It looks like default scanning under nmap is incompatible with the kernel
that 9.0 Pro ships with. You can run default scans (nmap 192.168.1.0/24 etc.)
as a normal user, but this will not work as root. The workaround for
performing root level scans is:
linuxbox root# nmap -vvP0 -sT 192.168.1.0/24 (as an example)
So, go verbose, disable ping scan, and use TCP connect scanning to perform
the nmap run. Yes, this is clunky. Yes, this is a known issue with 9.0 Pro,
and SuSE has tickets open regarding it that they are working on. Also note
that the nmap that ships with 9.0 Pro is v3.30 - nmap stable is up to v3.49,
but again it doesn't appear to be the nmap code that matters, but the kernel
code for shipping 9.0 Pro.
Just thought I'd share that with everyone - I spent some time last week
inspecting this issue, and had to Google a bit before I came across the
information above. We'll probably see updates for this in the near future.
