[opensuse] 11.4 and vlc media player: why won't vlc start-up?
I just installed 11.4 with KDE (clean install, 32-bit version, off the DVD), and installed vlc which is my preferred choice as a multimedia application (for TV viewing, DVD viewing, capturing TV programs). However vlc will simply not start - the cursor bounces around but no vlc. I get the following error (extracted from session errors): OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 6600/AGP/SSE/3DNOW! Thanks for this, but I think this is where it came from :-) . I have the packman repo selected and all multimedia apps came from there AFAIK. Nevertheless, I shall look in the software manager to see the source of vlc as installed (and deleted and re-installed). These channels are probably muted by default. Most notably, HDMI output is muted. Start Konsole, and type "alsamixer". Select the soundcard with [F6] and use right-arrow to select channels, even past the right edge of the screen (keep pressing right-arrow). HDMI output is called SPDIF1 in my case. It helps a lot to have KDE Multimedia control open and keep testing sound.
Which is something I have done to get sound working correctly even since the nonsense called pulseaudio was foisted on us :'( ......

Thanks for your response, but the problem with this is that I also use, and have used for years, xine and with xine there are *no* hassles, and never have been, at all with sound on the digital HD channels. There are no problems with these channels when I use vlc (and just to avoid any forthcoming "AHAs" :-) this was on an earlier version of openSUSE). The bottom line is that kaffeine is a dud. (I only mentioned kaffeine in my opening post simply to indicate that while I cannot vlc to work for some unknown reason kaffeine works, in as far as that it starts, I can get TV pictures and even get sound on all non-digital HD channels,) BC -- Great Man reaches complete understanding of the main issues; Petty Man reaches complete understanding of the minute details." Is there any chance you are trying to run VLC as the user "root"? For some odd reason there is *NO WAY* to run VLC as root UNLESS you recompile it yourself and change an option to allow it. When I tried to run VLC from the root shell, I've got an error message clearly saying it should not run as a root. In my case VLC (from Packman) under 11.4/KDE4 fails with "Floating point exception". Googling revealed very strange workaround: run it under strace. strace vlc works. "Ah, the old, 'It's *HIS* fault not mine!', trick, eh Chief?" (paraphrasing Maxwell Smart) :-) . By some lucky, it would seem now, coincidence, 11.4 with *KDE* automatically installs the latest nVidia driver which (in my case at least) is #190. But...unhappily, no vlc :-( . Yes.....I seem to recall that there was such an error statement showing up (about the floating point thingie)....

strace vlc works.
Hmmmm...I'll try this. Thanks for this. *BUT* *WHY* should anyone even have to do this when vlc works perfectly in the gnome environment, for chrissake!? OK, just tried this.....and it works: I now get moving pictures on the screen from vlc. But now to have to get the damn sound working! Moving pictures but no sound. Pulseaudio is an ABOMINATION! So now, if I want to continue to run openSUSE 11.4 with KDE, I need to alter the run parameters for vlc.....luvly, *not*. Way to go, KDE! Thanks for your response. No, there is no way that I am running vlc as root. Because there was a hiccup a couple of days ago when I first installed 11.4 KDE, and to ensure that what you suggest may be the case, I re-installed 11.4 KDE today (a fully new, fresh, installation). Same result: vlc will *NOT* start. I get the same error message as I posted in my first post.
