[opensuse] Laptop does not fully boot
Hi, My new latop running OS 11.4 does not fully boot anymore. When I add 3 to the Grub boot-line, I see a number of services being started but then the machine hangs hard. The only thing I can do is press the power-button. AFAIK there was no change since the last time I booted it. What did happen was that I could not shut down. I had to press the power button. Maybe related ? Anyway, I would like to have my laptop back, without re-installing. What can I do to recover ? With a recovery CD I disabled the last services I saw starting, but this did not help. I have the impression it stops when starting the video. But it's the same problem when I start in runlevel 3. /var/log/Xorg.0.log is empty (0 bytes). Where could I disable the graphics video ? I have the ATI video drivers installed. They did work for some days though, but to eliminate that I want to use the framebuffer, like just after the installation. Thanks for any help. Replying to my own posts :-/ I found /etc/X11 and changed x11-config to the install config I think. Then I get a graphical login screen, but there all hangs again. I tried runlevel 3 and the machine hangs also, after "all" services are started I think. Can you try booting from a liveCD or a liveUSB and see if everything is fine ? just to make you more confortable, re-installing the same OS with same version is not a big headache if / is in a different mounting point than /home :) regards Paulo On Tue, Jun 14, 2011 at 5:49 AM, Koenraad Lelong <k.lelong@ace-electronics.be> wrote:

Hi Paulo, I tried with the OS11.4 live-cd, which does not work. It boots but at a certain moment, it hangs. Only a text underscore. I tried with a Sustestudio USB-stick, text only, OS 11.3 which works fine. I tried with an Ubuntu 10.4 stick which works fine as far as I can tell, I didn't try everything. I tried to re-install, works fine, until it does it's final start. Then it hangs on a black screen with only a graphical cursor. I'm going to try Kubuntu. The strange thing is : it worked ! I ran successfully memtest for two full passes and the third about 80%, so memory isn't an issue. Thanks for your help. Again replying my to own post. I tried Kubuntu 11.04. This has a similar problem : at a certain moment it hangs. I installed Ubuntu 10.4 which works fine, for what I tested at the moment. I have had a problem with my laptop hanging during boot (not with every release) and found that if I hit the shift key (I think any key would work) it would magically come back to life but hang again. Eventually it would boot and be trouble free until next boot. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Not sure, if this is your problem, but many people including myself had bootup problems with 11.4 until they disable parallel boot. Try setting RUN_PARALLEL="no" in /etc/sysconfig/boot Regards -- Mark Goldstein -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I re-installed OS 11.4, and went in with a live cd of ubuntu. I changed /etc/sysconfig/boot to have RUN_PARALLEL="no". Did not work. I installed OS 11.3 with the same problem. But when I rebooted and added a 3 on the grub boot-line, a text-based yast completed the installation. Now when I reboot to runlevel 3 I can successfully log in. Then I tried to go to runlevel 5 and then do startx, but then the machine hung. I fear it has something to do with the graphics (an ATI-card : ATI M93, Mobility Radeon HD4500 series). I did google before I purchased the laptop, and I found some successstories so I bought it. The unexplainable thing is : it worked.
