[opensuse] installing xen on leap
Hello, I'm used to install virtual machines with VirtualBox (after having used VmWare for years) but now I want to learn Xen. My test machine runs Leap. I installed Xen with YaST, but the xen menu from grub2 options gives a black screen and no network reachable from other local computer. Standard Leap boots, with bridged network and connect to the net summary of my work here: http://dodin.info/wiki/pmwiki.php?n=Doc.Xen What can I test next? thanks jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

To boot a Xen Dom0, you need kernel-xen and the xen hypervisor "xen-4.x.x". Those two plus the new initrd are booted from your bootloader. I'm not familiar with grub, I use pxe. The network problem might be due to your bridge interface not getting an address? Still, you should not have a blank screen. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (7.1°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - your free DNS host, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

all this seems to have been setup by yast

the bridged interface works with the "normal" (non xen) Leap boot I don't find any occurrence of "xen" in journalctl, my it be the crash happen before the journal start? last message I've seen on the screen is "target initialization". I will wait 15 minutes between boots to have a date as tag on journalctl.. thanks jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yes, I would expect so too.

Okay, then it should really work in xen too. Maybe try booting with vga=normal to avoid any graphics issues. My xen hosts have very simple vga graphics. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (7.2°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - virtual servers, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Did you happen to try Ctrl-Alt-F1 ? The boot-up looks good, I still think it's a graphics issue. I boot in GUI with normal Leap. but for xen, even init 1 do not boot, I have no boot journal (in fact no "xen" a all in the whole journal, only boot with -pv kernel) and after the video, no keyboard, no network (no ping) - ame on any of the 3 xen options in grub menu. on normal boot all works jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Well, it it were me, I would hook up a serial console to find out what's going on. That your screen blanks suggests something graphical, but when you can't switch to a virtual console, the system appears to be hung. don't know if there is any serial interface (apart usb) - I could if really necessary (I have a serial console somewhere), but I really don't miss the serial console time :-) during some test, I could manage to have a screen with text on it. When the system hang, I displays an usb connect/disconnect message each time I touch the keyboard (wired usb) (no ps/2 on this computer), and do nothing else jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

You could try regenerating the initrd, you can do that from the non-xen system. I know dracut doesn't always produce a working initrd, maybe this is one of those times. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (8.8°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - your free DNS host, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Not sure you'll find much literature on the topic. Maybe I'll go and install a Leap xen system and see what happens. I did try earlier but I had root on nfs, and dracuts initrd didn't know how to deal with that. I think I opened a bug on that. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (2.4°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free dynamic DNS, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

what I don't know is how to generate an initrd else than for the working install. I remember some command line option... jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

mkinitrd (which is a wrapper for dracut). I would try this: mkinitrd -k <yourxenkernel> -i initrd.new1 That'll create /boot/initrd.new1 which you can then boot with. You'll have to fiddle with grub too, dunno anything about that part. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (3.1°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - virtual servers, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
What I last did: install a brand new Leap. Minimal X (icewm). Go to yast, install xen an tools. reboot xen option same problem, no boot stops at "target init" or something similar the last image from a video tape: http://dodin.org/owncloud/index.php/s/BH9qjCX7Xya8fXq jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Weird. You still get a blank screen? It doesn't make any sense when you're in console-only mode. I'm running out of suggestions - maybe also try booting with "vga=normal". Otherwise it's time for the serial console. "console=ttyS0,115200,8n1" - ah, but you don't have a serial port ...
the last image from a video tape:
scrubbing RAM - that's quite early in the sequence. Hmm, how much memory did you give to Dom0 ? The option is "dom0_mem=xxxM" We can compare hardware - my test system from two days ago was an HP DL360G5, quad-core, 8Gb RAM, single disk. Some basic graphics interface. I installed over PXE+SSH+HTTP, but that should not make a difference. yes, Dell Optiplex, 6Gb ram, 2 SSD (240Gb for xen install), seems much more than necessary. thanks jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

In grub somewhere, I guess YaST may already have done it. My line in PXE looks like this: append wessex/xen-4.4.3_08-38.1.gz dom0_mem=512M --- wessex/vmlinuz-3.16.7-32-xen root=/dev/cciss/c0d0p1 noresume vga=normal rootflags=rw,relatime --- wessex/initrd-3.16.7-32-xen Maybe check out this page, it has some grub examples: http://wiki.xenproject.org/wiki/Xen_Project_Best_Practices
there are two "kernel" lines in grub, multiboot and module (and none "linux")
I think it must be the multiboot line.

Yeah, 10G is more then plenty for the Dom0, but your guests will need space too. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (5.4°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free dynamic DNS, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

sure, but Leap should work. I have no real immediate use of xen (I know pretty well VirtualBox), and try it on a dedicated computer, so I can help debugging if necessary :-) but I may try citrix, why not? thanks jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
