[opensuse] 12.3 Rescue CD Question
All this was done on my 12.2 side of system. See Signature below for Config. I downloaded the 12.3 Rescue CD from the opensuse download page. I get the same menu as the 12.3 Live CD. Nothing about Rescue. Is this correct and if so why would I need the Live CD also? I will report seperately later after I make sure I did not do something wrong. Ran md5sum and sha1sum. Both correct. Then burned CD with the version of K3B from :
URL: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Release:/410/openSUSE_12.2/ 9wvj:~> rpm -q k3b k3b-2.0.2-101.7.x86_64
Burned the iso and booted the system. I get the same menu as the 12.3 Live CD. Nothing about Rescue. Is this correct and if so why would I need the Live CD also? Also installed the version from packman. No difference except it seems to retain the burn info and does not check md5 if you try burning again. I will report seperately later after I make sure I did not do something wrong. Thanks in advance for any comments. I downloaded all three images and burned them, but only booted the DVD for installation. Once I saw it's 'rescue' entry in the boot menu, I didn't think to compare it to the others. Then, after the installation and during debugging of some minor problems, I booted the released 'rescue' CD and can confirm it /appears/ to be a 'live' CD. regards, Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Carl Thanks for your response. Thats what I did at the RC2 level. Saw the Rescue and downloaded it but never got to burn it. I redownloaded it this morning and burned. I have also booted it and get the livecd menu. Did not go any further since I am working on 12.2 this morning.

It is not installable. Runs xfce. The idea is that the selection of tools is better for rescuing. dd_rescue, photorec, mc, parted, yast. No email/nntp application. A small web browser of the mozilla family. Chat client. No Libre Office. I have not tried to see if persistent mode is available. You can see the entire list of packages here: <http://susepaste.org/13855134>. I made it from RC2, so it is not an official list :-) - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. There are already multiple such live images out there, well known, well established, exiting for years. Why do we need yet another one? What it does better than knoppix, systemrescuecd, partedmagic and others? It is quite useful to have such tools as part of installation DVD, so I can spare extra download. But if I need to download extra image anyway, why exactly should I chose this one? -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.19 (GNU/Linux) iEYEARECAAYFAlFNKpsACgkQR6LMutpd94xhFACfQSz8XPZjdGfutFN7dw1QAbpE CBkAnAmj7hBZAWSAOjroYda721JR0PaY =Vba4 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

It's openSUSE. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (6.1°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free DNS hosting, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

It is openSUSE. It has the same kernel flavour, same style of things.

With openSUSE Rescue you get openSUSE flavored solution, which means you can use chroot and openSUSE native tools. With other you'll hit numerous problems starting with kernel mismatch. This rescue is first attempt that most likely lacks script that will for instance fix YaST and zypper, mount all necessary directories and then chroot, so that you can run YaST and zypper to fix installation that you can't boot anymore, but that will come with time.
It is quite useful to have such tools as part of installation DVD, so I can spare extra download. But if I need to download extra image anyway, why exactly should I chose this one?
Because with live rescue image you have working system that you can use email, forums and IRC, and at the some time have chroot to broken system. With DVD you are on your own, which will for sure work for you or me, but not for many out there that need advice, if nothing else, about openSUSE organization. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
