My CUPS has also stopped working (I use remote printers via lpd) after the online upgrade to cups-libs-1.1.10-81 cups-client-1.1.10-81 cups-1.1.10-81 and nothing seems to help. Both Yast2 and http://localhost:631/ hang during the new printer setup. Can anybody confirm that the new CUPS packages work? I'm considering a "downgrade" right now. -- Alexandr.Malusek@imv.liu.se

I've checked out the new upgrades and found some problems - roughly the same ones as yours I think. You might like to try some of what appears below if you haven't already tried it. Otherwise, I don't know what you can do. I got cups-1.1.14 to work by compiling from source. I've compiled it from source in several earlier versions and compiled just about every version of gimp-print going (including my own customised version), which means I don't have a standard setup so I can blame myself if things go wrong. If things are going wrong for you you might want to contact feedback@suse.de. JDL ==Extract from changes.log== 25-02-02 Now install cups-1.1.14 from SuSE update... (just because it's there) ... Printer has disappeared: System > Tools > CUPS Administration Tools (KUPS) reveals there is no printer installed. Try to install one, but USB ports missing and printer not detected... I think I've seen this kind of thing before ... reboot with printer switched on and try again (in case it's got something to do with what isr called plug'n'play but is really hotplugging)... In Kups: Printer > Add printer/class... Next> Local printer: Next> /* Sing and shout and dance with joy - * this time the thing's listed */ Choose EPSON USB Printer: Next> /* Wait while kups is rebuilding driver database - * probably a good thing because of all those redundant drivers. */ Select EPSON:Stylus Photo 870/* apparently no language specified */:Next> Now I choose the first of seven apparently identical drivers /* Either these are different languages or I really have created that * many: someday I must check ;-) */ Next> <Settings...> /* default settings are always wrong: I want 720dpi a4 * adaptive hybrid */ <test...> /* make sure it works */ No test page appeared. Try again with old Netscape 4.76 interface: http://localhost:631 Name: photo Location: usb://dev/usb/lp0 # I think that's right Description: Epson stylus photo 870 (continue) Port :EPSON USB port (continue) Make: EPSON (continue) Model: EPSON Stylus Photo 870, CUPS+GIMP-print v4.2.0 (en) /* that's more reassuring than before - only two (en) drivers */ (continue) Now seems to be refusing to work... 1K read (stalled) appears. ... Go back and reinstall from source code. # cd /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/cups-1.1.14/ # make install # /etc/init.d/cups restart and test ... Now printer works immediately without any reconfiguration. :-)

In case you don't have a subscription to the suse-security-announce list, SuSE has officially said they made a mistake with the latest CUPS package, which indeed does fix a security issue but breaks other things. They say a fix will be made available via YOU (Yast2 Online Update) and their ftp sites as soon as possible. -- Five is a sufficiently close approximation to infinity. -- Robert Firth
