Nice review for 7.2 in UK mag
My apologies if someone's already done this, I haven't noticed: One of my favoured computer mags in the UK, Computer shopper (www.computershopper.co.uk) gives a highly complimentary write-up to 7.2. At the top of each review they do a hit, miss or maybe sign, with thumbs up or thumbs down, and a couple of words summarising the review. In the case of SuSE 7.2 their summary reads: "very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very good". I think I've got the number of veries right. They are not normally particularly effusive, so I think SuSE has impressed them. It seems to have persuaded the reviewer, Charlie Stross, to go over to SuSE as his main distro, so well done everyone. I thought 7.2 the best to date, certainly. Best to all Fergus

Linux Format, another one from the UK, also has a very favorable 7.2 review. They gave it 9/10. See p.24 of the September issue. *************************************************** Powered by SuSE Linux 7.2 Professional KDE 2.1.2 KMail 1.2 Bryan S. Computer Shopper is the only mainstream pc mag I read, largely because of Charlie Stross's coverage of Linux. He usually gets some reviews of free software into the main bits of the mag. I've just opened the latest issue (165 Nov) and noticed he's got a review of Mutt 1.3 into the mainstream whats new section. The magazine as a whole seems to take a much less Microsoft stance than most of the others. Mike

We need some of that in the US. If you read PC Magazine or PC World you almost wouldn't know Linux exists. *************************************************** Powered by SuSE Linux 7.2 Professional KDE 2.1.2 KMail 1.2 Bryan S. Shameless plug: D.H. Brown just did a very good Linux review: http://dhbrown.com/dhbrown/Linux.cfm "For the first time, the strongest Linux distributions surpass the weakest UNIX systems in overall functionality. Using the version 2.4 Linux kernel has improved the features of the operating system. In addition, all of the vendors studied - SuSE, Red Hat, Caldera, Turbolinux, and Debian GNU - have increased the breadth and depth of their bundled network infrastructure software. The report provides detailed analysis against critical criteria: scalability, RAS (reliability, availability, serviceability), system management, Internet and web-application services, and directory and security services. With these upgrades in place, the leading distributions of Linux are able to serve as general-purpose operating systems for a wide range of departmental and workgroup applications." The executive summary is a good read: http://www.suse.de/~grimmer/export/ex010807a.pdf "As shown in Figure 1, SuSE Linux 7.2 has the overall functional lead among the studied Linux distributions, taking the top place in the categories of RAS (Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability), Systems Management, and Directory and Security Services. Red Hat Linux 7.1 takes a close second place in overall functionality, leading in the areas of Scalability and Internet and Web-Application Services. Caldera OpenLinux 3.1 makes an above average showing, but none of its features carries a unique advantage over the competition. Turbolinux Server 6.5 scores lower, due in part to its reliance on the older Linux kernel. Finally, Debian GNU/Linux 2.2r3 takes last place, as it is nearing the end of its release lifecycle and has simply fallen behind its competitors." Show this to your boss, if he insists in installing Red Hat :) Bye, LenZ -- ------------------------------------------------------------------ Lenz Grimmer SuSE GmbH mailto:grimmer@suse.de Schanzaeckerstr. 10 http://www.suse.de/~grimmer/ 90443 Nuernberg, Germany The less a statesman amounts to the more he loves a flag.

Yesterday I'd only just opened the magazine, having read it today I see that Charlie has also got a review of VIM, a feature article about Linux office applications and as brilliant a demolition of Microsoft in his usual column as I've ever seen in almost any mag let alone a mainstream pc one. btw I've never met the guy, or any of the publishers of ComputerShopper, niether do I have any sort of relationship with any of them.
