[opensuse] Trouble reading DVD/CDs
Gradually my Suse 10.3 box has got worse and worse reading DVD/CDs. It has now got to the point where it wont recognise/read any DVD/CD I put in to either drive (Sony hardware - 1xdvd Burner, 1xDVD-ROM) Is to the point where if I need to read any optical media, I have to fire up Windows (shudderrrr) Any thoughts? Thanks, John. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

First question are you getting any problems in Windows (check the Windows error logs, windows is rather good at burying hardware error messages until things are completely fried). If DVD related errors exist, the DVD is probably failing. Secondly, if the DVD is SMART enabled it might be worth running SMART on the device. (This is unlikely but worth a shot). Thirdly ... what happens in you run... a) wodim dev=<device name> -prcap and with a DVD in the following b) wodim dev=<device name> -atip from the CLI Fourthly what are you seeing in the system logs.. - -- ============================================================================== I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone.
