[opensuse] How to set up CUPS for shared printer?
I have a number of computers on an NFS network at home. Most are running OpenSuse 11.0, several use Open Suse 11.2 Two of the these machines have no printer of their own, my laptop and one of my desktops. I'd like to configure CUPS to share the two printers on my old desktop - an HP-1220c large format printer and a Brother HL-5140 with those on the network. Unfortunately, when I try to understand how this works, all the documentation I find assumes I'm doing this with config files that I have to manually edit. Nothing seems to refer to the CUPS server I connect to at http://localhost:631. And when I try to look up some of the files they don't even exist on my machine. Is there a straigtforward guide to setting up CUPS in an opensuse 11.0 environment that I can follow? Recommendations would be appreciated. The CUPS version on my old desktop is 1.37. -- Bob Smits bob@rsmits.ca -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks, John. I had googled for solutions, but apparently not quite the string you used. I'm going to overhaul the desktop over the holidays, replacing some memory and a DVD drive, so I might as well toss in 11.1 as well, and set up remote printing at the same time. Why not go for 11.2? Its pretty solid. And Yast will probably do all you need to share that printer. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

This desktop has all my old docs, email etc stored on it. I still use KDE 3.5 for it, and don't want to contaminate it with KDE 4.3 "funkiness" that I experience on my laptop running 11.2 / KDE 4.3.4. 11.1 was the last one to offer installing KDE 3.5 as part of the install process, rather than installing it afterward. I'll probably move to 11.2 in six months. (And yes, I have it all backed up with a 750 GB USB drive). -- Bob Smits bob@rsmits.ca -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Simply use YaST, let it do the job for you. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I fear with the old YaST printer module up to openSUSE 11.0 the setup is actually neither easy nor user-friendly. In contrast the new YaST printer module since openSUSE 11.1 provides two items "Printing via Network" (for client systems) and "Share Printers" (for the server) which should (hopefully) provide a much easier way to do it. For more information regarding YaST printer setup, see http://en.opensuse.org/YaST/Development/Printer_Enhancement For basic information regarding "Configuring CUPS in the Network", see http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:CUPS_in_a_Nutshell Kind Regards Johannes Meixner -- SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, Maxfeldstrasse 5, 90409 Nuernberg, Germany AG Nuernberg, HRB 16746, GF: Markus Rex -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks very much, Johannes. Best of the season to you and your family. Bob -- bob@rsmits.ca 8) Use common sense in routing cable. Do not wrap the cable around flourescent light ballasts or cyclotrons, for example. -- Ethernet Headstart Product, Information and Installation Guide, Bell Technologies, pg. 11 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
