[opensuse] 11.2/KDE significantly faster than 12.2/KDE
As described in another thread, I recently upgraded a laptop to 12.2 only to receive massive complaints from the user that it had become slow to the point of being unworkable. I received various suggestions here on the list and tried them without achieving much improvement. Yesterday I installed 11.2 on exactly the same hardware, and it is _noticeably_ faster, even with the default settings. Looking at memory usage etc., there doesn't appear to be any significant differences between the two systems. Here is an example of the difference: 11.2 - screensaver is on, screen is blank. I hit a key, and have the login window *snap*! in less than 1 second. 12.2 - screensaver is on, screen is blank. I hit a key, and have the login window in, wait for it..., about 2 seconds, some times even 5. I can't really point a finger at anything in particular - the machine isn't overloaded, doesn't do much swapping, eye candy has been switched off, yet 12.2 seems particularly slower when switching tasks, including the time it takes for the switched-to window to become "ready". (I picked 11.2 by accident, it was the nearest NET install CD within reach). These two machines will most likely just remain on 11.2, maybe I'll try 11.4 too, so problem solved - it's just annoying that there should be such a difference. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (11.6°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Have you (have had) turned off / uninstalled any indexing stuff? Tracker, Zeitgeist, strigi, yadayadayada? -dnh, who has even disabled updatedb and runs that manually via an own script every couple of months[1] when changes not indexed otherwise, like my music/media stuff, have changed enough. Oh, yes, I _WANT_ locate, but I don't need to update the db that often, as the system and most other stuff is pretty static. The 12.2 system is vanilla openSUSE, but Tracker isn't installed, nor is Zeitgeist (dunno what it is), strigi might be running. The interesting thing is - 11.2 is faster in the 100% default install. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (10.3°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

you might want to consider for your customer: install 11.4 (which i _guess_ is nearly as fast as 11.2 (when compared to 12.2), update it fully and then transition him/her to Evergreen in a couple of weeks...it will be fast, dependable and little changing for a long while.. and, 11.4 has been very stable/dependable for a long while, already. -- dd http://tinyurl.com/DD-Software -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yes, I think I'll quite probably install 11.4 - that is what these laptops were running previously. Still, I can't help thinking that <something> must have happened in 12.[12], but I guess it's not worth worrying much about. I have newer, more capable laptops running 12.2, no speed issues there. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (11.9°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I noticed the same thing when I upgraded my main computer from 11.0 to 12.1. 12.1 could be painfully slow at times. 12.2 is better, but still not as fast as 11.0. There is also a bug in Seamonkey that causes it lock up solid for a few seconds occasionally. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yep, that's it - Celeron 1.5GHz with ATI Radeon Xpress 200M, 1Gb RAM, 128Mb shared by the video card. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (10.2°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

It isn't just KDE. I updated a 10yro laptop from 11.2 and one of the Window Managers to 12.2 XFCE and I see the several second delay to switch virtual desktops. Jeffrey -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

What effect to you get if you create /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/70-composite.conf containing: Section "Extensions" Option "Composite" "Disable" EndSection and restart X? -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
