[opensuse] Monitor Lan wifi.
Hi. I have a wired LAN here. To my ISP router I also have a Linksys Wireless router. As such the Wireless router is conencted to the LAN. With what can I monitor the signalstrenght and maybe other goodies via the LAN ? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

If you on a PC/laptop with wireless enable you can type in prompt # iwlist wlan0 scan or you can use some software, for example wavemon regards, medwinz -- Mel Brooks - "Tragedy is when I cut my finger. From any machine that has a wireless network card, you can right click KnetworkManager in the tray area and it will show you the signal strength of any router it can see, yours or your neighbors.
Ubuntu has something called NetworkManager that does the same thing. You don't have to be connected to that router, you don't have to be using your wireless nic, (you could be connected by wires) but you do have to have a wireless nic. -- ----------JSA--------- Someone stole my tag line, so now I have this rental. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Is the wireless router your only WiFi equipment? In that case, I don't think there's anything you can do. However, if you have a WiFi NIC in your system, you could use Kismet. -- Use OpenOffice.org <http://www.openoffice.org> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Oops I sent my last message before I could finish composing it. If you haven't heard about the alternate firmwares for Linksys (and other) routers, check out www.dd-wrt.com I use that on mine and it shows on the status page all the wireless clients and their signal strength. It also has other information, like bandwidth graphs: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1415/1414253329_9751af3604_o.jpg You might also be able to get this data out of the router (with the alternate firmware) using SNMP. There are other alternate firmwares such as Tomato, OpenWRT, etc -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
