[opensuse] administer vista from opensuse
Hello, My 88 years old mother just bough a new computer. On the old one, she used openSUSE, but on the new she will use Vista (she needs to play some sort of power point files that I simply can't make play music on opensuse, even in wine - given her age, I can't ask her too much) I know little about vista, but there is some sort of "remote admin" is this feature usable from my own openSUSE? (we are not in the same town) I installed openSUSE primarily to be able to do remote admin :-() is that VNC? thanks jdd -- http://www.dodin.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
You should be able to setup RDP on Vista and use rdestop on openSUSE for remote admin. That's one of the ways I remote admin my users XP PCs at work. The other is to install uklravnc on the windows PC and use KRDC or a web browser to remote admin. HTH James On Sat, May 31, 2008 at 5:40 AM, jdd <jdd@dodin.org> wrote:

Yes, VNC works well for this. Its not totally secure, but for the amount of time you will be on line it should do. You will both need broadband. -- ----------JSA--------- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I like to use Hamachi in combination with VNC when I can't get RDP working. Hamachi has clients for Windows, Mac and Linux. I didn't know about this product, but it looks useful - Thanks for the tip - Joe -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You can use VNC, but Vista has built-in Remote Desktop Connection or RDC software. http://www.perfectreign.com/stuff/2007/20070601_suse_rdc.jpg That's me using RDC from my laptop into an XP machine and.. http://www.perfectreign.com/stuff/2007/20071101_rdc_vista.jpg ...connecting to my main Vista desktop at work. I use KDE and have the Remote desktop connection under Application > System > Remote Access > Remote Desktop Connection. To use RDC to connect to a Wintendo box, you type in rdc:\\username@ip.ad.re.ss You can also use VNC on this tool, but I like RDC better. -- kai www.filesite.org || www.4thedadz.com || www.perfectreign.com remember - a turn signal is a statement, not a request -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

What has to be done in order to get past a firewall on either the controlled or controller system?

Outbound from your system you don't need any firewall changes. On the other end (mom's end) you need to allow port 5900 to be open to the internet, and if that goes thru a router (such as adsl router) that router must direct incoming port 5900 to mom's machine. Usually simply installing VNC and running the server side of VNC will open the port thru the windows firewall with the usual amount of Vista "Allow or Deny" messages the first time. -- ----------JSA--------- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Stan - someone else mentioned port 5900. You can also go the route of setting up an SSH connection on the Wintendo box, thus creating a VPN to the box. IIRC, you'll need to run the SSH under cygwin or something like that. -- kai www.filesite.org || www.4thedadz.com || www.perfectreign.com remember - a turn signal is a statement, not a request -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
