full multimedia for PPC openSUSE 10.0 final
Hello, I have just uploaded some Packman ( http://packman.links2linux.de/ ) packages compiled for PPC to ftp://spike.fa.gau.hu/pub/pmppc/ , which give PPC openSUSE the missing multimedia functionalities. It has enhanced KDE multimedia support, all kinds of audio and video support (only for those formats, which have OSS drivers, as Win32Codecs do not work here...), and some additional utilities. Just add it as an additional idditional installation source, and you are ready to install the packages. Some notes: - all packages were compiled on a G4 Pegasos ( http://www.pegasosppc.com/products.php ) - I added some CFLAGS, which seem to improve speed and lower CPU usage on G4. These are: "-mtune=G4 -maltivec -mabi=altivec" (borrowed from Gentoo's /etc/make.conf). I read the gcc man page, but I'm still not sure, if it breaks compatibilty with non Altivec PPC processors or not. I don't have access to other PPC processors, so please test it, and let me know. I'll recompile without it (or make a non optimized tree as well, if there is problem with it). You are welcome! It's added at the bottom. It's the first time, I edited a wiki page, but seems to be all right ;-) Bye, Peter

Thanks! I got a lot of downloads, but this is the first time, I got some feedback! I'll recompile the packages without Altivec optimalisations. I couldn't measure more then 5% speed difference anyway... Bye, Peter

Hi Peter, sure the problem is "-maltivec"? I would first try to change "-mtune=G4". -- mdc

It does not really matter. For 5% difference (but some apps became even slower), it does not seem to worth compiling two seperate trees. I even recompiled glibc, which had more effect on application speed then all of the individual package optimalisations, but still not something worth the effort. Bye, Peter Ps: my next try will be to recompile kernel to minimise features to the bare minimum needed, and recompile some packages without the buffer overflow prevention feature, to see how much performance penalty that has...

I recompiled everything now without Altivec optimalisations. It did not make such a difference a user could feel, so I don't have to compile two sepereate trees. Tthis time, G3 users should also be able to use my binaries (and IBM Power server users, if they want to create mp3's on a fast processor ;-) ). Bye, Peter
Hello, I have just uploaded some updated packages to ftp://spike.fa.gau.hu/pub/pmppc/ It's libxine and ffmpeg security and feature updates. A recent addition was gcompris, a nice education game for children. I'll add some more packages later, as time permits. Bye, Peter
