This is the error i get: "421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection." i ran an nmap on the machine and i see that port 20 is closed however, port 21 is open. could that cause a problem?? my inetd.conf and proftpd.conf files look fine from what i can tell..... thx db original post follows: Hi all, I'm a linux newbie. installed Suse v 7.1 and i cant get the ftp daemon up. i downloaded the latest version of proftpd and installed it. CANNOT manage to get it up using inetd, could get it up as a standalone service by pointing proftpd to the proftpd.conf file. also noticed that i can't create any users/groups using the UI. it cant find the following files: /etc/yppasswd /etc/ypgroup they dont exist in the file system. any help would be appreciated. thx. db

ftp runs on port 21. what does the line in /etc/inetd.conf relating to proftpd look like? do a cat /etc/inetd.conf | grep proftpd and paste that into an email? also, what do the first few lines of /etc/proftpd.conf look like, in particular, what is the value of ServerType (inetd or standalone) do you have the ftpdir rpm installed on the system (rpm -q ftpdir) are you wanting to allow anonymous ftp? you are aware that you cannot connect to the ftp server as root? do you have anything in /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny if you do, add proftpd: 127.0.0.1 : ALLOW to /etc/hosts.allow then restart inetd with rcinetd restart and ftp localhost and you should be prompted for a username and password.
