I've experimented with the 2.4.2 kernel from kernel.org and encountered two problems: failures of USB initialization and no sound. I'm not too concerned about the USB problems since I don't have any USB devices, but I do want to get my sound back. I've read somewhere here that the problem is that the kernel doesn't include ALSA support. Are there any workarounds for that or other methods anyone here has used to get sound under 2.4.4? Paul

You will have to get the alsa sources and install from that because SuSE puts the alsa modules in the kernel binary rpm only. Once you go to a vanilla kernel you loose all modules that suse puts in the binary kernel rpm. So every think you want from then on you'll have to install from their respective sources. Alsa is just one of them. They used to have a modules rpm but no longer.... Mark

Get ALSA sources (http://www.alsa-project.org/) and copile them!
I've got ALSA working on 2.4.4 like a charm.

Turns out that www.alsa.org (as contrasted with the URL you cite) has to do with Lou Gehrig's disease. Hope our computers don't catch it. Paul
