Hi James: The Real Audio Player seems to be the most popular choice at present,. www.real.com is the place to look. The latest player for Linux is ver 5, and I've had some problems with it. Not as easy to setup as the Windose version... also I can't get it to read some files that the MS version WILL read.... But the new G2 player for Linux should be out early in the new year and holds great promise. (Perhaps we could ask SuSE to include the RA Player as an RPM in the new distribution!!! :-) The RA player is a streaming player - ie you listen as the stuff arrives, you don't have to download it first. (although you can choose to do so) On our website, I use 8.5kb/s bandwidth (about as low as you can go) and a 30 minute programme is about 1.7 mB in size. I also upload a 5 minute TV News bulletin every morning (also about 1.7mB) and at 06:05, when things are quiet, it takes about 6 minutes to do an FTP transfer by modem. However - a file of similar size that I bring back from London every day, can take anywhere from 6 minutes to 8 hours to transfer..... it all depends on the network traffic! Needless to say - if you are >streaming< a 30 minute radio show, it takes almost exactly 30 minutes to hear it! <grin> although - if the network is congested - I must admit it....
