I just did a clean install of 8.2. When the system boots and attempts to load the log in screen, my monitor displays a warning that the signal is out of sync. I booted "Failsafe", and tried running yast in text mode. It shows that my monitor was detected as a Samsung SyncMaster 4S, when in fact it's a Samsung SyncMaster 957MB. When I try to change the settings using yast, I get the same blank screen with the monitor displaying the "out of sync" message again. I get the same result when I try to run sax2 directly. Once sax2 launches, the screen goes blank with the out of sync message. Since I can get to a command line, and I (think I) can use vim, what is the X config file I need to edit manually? Try this. Enter in the command option at the menu when you get the boot screen. vga=ask. See if that doesnt help. If not repost and we'll see about a couple of other options. HTH, Curtis.

0k, you'll need to boot to run level 3, boot command is "init 3" (obligatory no qoutes). Or try this: Use the framebuffer device to configure your graphics card. To do this, proceed as follows: Enter the following at the boot prompt: linux 3 vga=xxx If you use SuSE Linux version 7.1 or higher, first change to text mode by pressing ESC. Replace xxx with a value from the list below. This value specifies the resolution and color depth used by the X server later. Resolution in Pixels color depth | 640x480 800x600 1024x768 1280x1024 256 (8bit)| 769 771 773 775 32000 (15bit)| 784 787 790 793 65000 (16bit)| 785 788 791 794 16.7 Mil. (24bit)| 786 789 792 795 For example, to make an X server run with a 16-bit color depth and 1024x768 resolution, enter: linux 3 vga=xxx So two options to boot, one will boot in level 3 and give you a console, the other is an attemp to boot to a gui using a common framebuffer timing. Either way you need to set the res for you monitor correctly. My guess is that you installed it and were unaware of the F2 option to pick the default res you system would go to during boot. None the less you still need to setup the right parameters. A few other things you need to do when posting. A) what version are you running (you said that - good). B) the monitor (also done :) ). But one key bit if info is missing - what video card are you running? This is just as vital as everything else because it's the capabilities of the card that ties in to the over all picture. Now, the fact that it recognizes the Maker of the monitor but doesn't seem to be correct for the model is a consideration insofar that it must be understood that manufaterur names and industry standards are different. In otherwords you monitor my be the S4 family due to the components it uses and is configured at the factory different - hence the marketing vesioning of devices. That said you need to find out the vsync and hsync of you monitor. I have a SyncMaster 753DF and the monitor hsync/refresh is 50 to 120, but according to the system/sax/xf86 its 50-160. Now, the disc that came with the monitor has a program to essentially over clock the refresh h/vsyncs. The big brother of this monitor is the 755 DF is capable at hsync peak at 160,... hmmm! seems the 753 series is dumbed down. In fact it is capable of160 hsync peak - but unreliably - hence the defualt of 120 and the overclock of 160. Ok so, if you have and nvidia card you start sax (in init 3 - always for reliablity of config) and enter it this way sax2 -m 0=nvidia. and then pick the monitor that is yours or closest to it. If the v/hsyncs are not right (aka too high not to low) then turn them down to what they should be or less, You can always reconfig with a higher rate later, and if it fails you know where to dial it down to. If this still has problems the (for nvidia) run sax as such. sax2 -m 0=nv . "nv" are the dummy drivers, the only afford 2d and mesasoft glx software drivers. And then config the monitor. If you change the driver later chance are your going to need to reconfig the monitor as well, because like I said the monitor and the driver do not function independently - they are tied to one another. IF that still doesn't work the do sax2 -m 0=fbdev. This sets up the framebuffer and I believe will not produce a res higher than 800x600 or perhaps 1024x768 - but nothing at the 12x10 (1280x1024) or higher res. This will get it up. The things that are most important to remember is the video card and it's capabilities and the monitor capabilities. This is my XF86Config sections related to the video card and the monitor: Section "Monitor" Option "CalcAlgorithm" "CheckDesktopGeometry" DisplaySize 320 240 HorizSync 27-85 Identifier "Monitor[0]" ModelName "SYNCMASTER 753DF(T)" Option "DPMS" VendorName "SAMSUNG" VertRefresh 50-120 UseModes "Modes[0]" EndSection Section "Modes" Identifier "Modes[0]" Modeline "1280x1024" 119.28 1280 1280 1536 1720 1024 1024 1035 1070 Modeline "1024x768" 61.19 1024 1040 1216 1400 768 768 775 802 Modeline "1024x768" 71.39 1024 1040 1216 1400 768 768 776 802 Modeline "1024x768" 81.59 1024 1040 1216 1400 768 768 777 802 Modeline "1024x768" 91.79 1024 1040 1216 1400 768 768 781 802 Modeline "1024x768" 101.99 1024 1040 1216 1400 768 768 781 802 Modeline "1024x768" 112.88 1024 1040 1216 1400 768 768 781 802 Modeline "800x600" 37.44 800 816 928 1072 600 600 605 626 Modeline "800x600" 43.68 800 816 928 1072 600 600 606 626 Modeline "800x600" 49.92 800 816 928 1072 600 600 607 626 Modeline "800x600" 56.16 800 816 928 1072 600 600 613 626 Modeline "800x600" 62.40 800 816 928 1112 600 600 613 626 Modeline "800x600" 68.64 800 816 928 1112 600 600 613 626 Modeline "800x600" 74.88 800 816 928 1112 600 600 613 626 Modeline "640x480" 23.96 640 656 720 864 480 480 484 501 Modeline "640x480" 27.96 640 656 720 864 480 480 485 501 Modeline "640x480" 31.95 640 656 720 864 480 480 485 501 Modeline "640x480" 35.94 640 656 720 864 480 480 491 501 Modeline "640x480" 39.94 640 656 720 864 480 480 491 501 Modeline "640x480" 43.93 640 656 720 864 480 480 491 501 Modeline "640x480" 47.92 640 656 720 864 480 480 491 501 Modeline "1280x960" 95.85 1280 1296 1552 1736 960 960 968 1003 Modeline "1280x960" 111.82 1280 1296 1552 1736 960 960 970 1003 Modeline "1280x960" 127.80 1280 1296 1552 1792 960 960 971 1003 Modeline "1280x960" 141.44 1280 1296 1552 1792 960 960 973 1003 Modeline "1152x864" 77.55 1152 1168 1384 1568 864 864 871 902 Modeline "1152x864" 90.48 1152 1168 1384 1568 864 864 873 902 Modeline "1152x864" 103.40 1152 1168 1384 1568 864 864 874 902 Modeline "1152x864" 116.33 1152 1168 1384 1568 864 864 877 902 Modeline "1152x864" 127.16 1152 1168 1384 1568 864 864 877 902 EndSection Section "Screen" DefaultDepth 16 SubSection "Display" Depth 15 Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 16 Modes "1280x1024" "1280x960" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 32 Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 8 Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection Device "Device[0]" Identifier "Screen[0]" Monitor "Monitor[0]" EndSection Section "Device" BoardName "GeForce3 Ti 200" Driver "nvidia" Identifier "Device[0]" Screen 0 Option "Rotate" "off" Option "NoLogo" "1" Option "mmio" "1" VendorName "NVidia" EndSection Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Layout[all]" InputDevice "Keyboard[0]" "CoreKeyboard" InputDevice "Mouse[1]" "CorePointer" Option "Clone" "off" Option "Xinerama" "off" Screen "Screen[0]" EndSection Section "DRI" Group "video" Mode 0660 EndSection If the monitor is misconfiged, and this includes the sections monitor, modes, and screens. I'm a nurse that works for an agency. I contract out to hospitals and nursing homes that are short staffed. I generally work 3 to 11 and can't get to sleep before 3 am. That said the other aspect is that because I get paid 50% more than formally employed nurse do two facts have to be kept in mind. One is that as an agency employee I have cancellations do to the institution coercing their staff to do double shifts or shifts in patient populations. The other reality is that when I work at a major hospital on staff, I made X amount of money. Now I make X+50% and that means that what I used to have to work for 9 days to get a paycheck, I now only have to work 6. In otherwords I was hired as most nurses are - at 0.9 status - you work 9 out of 14 days. Now the same can be accomplished in 6 which can, at times leave me with as much as 3 or 4 days off a week to make the same amount of money as before. Given that graduation has just happened at the university here in Madison. A whole slew of fresh grads are hitting the market and now I'm getting cancellations. But in a month or so I be back upto speed. 50 to 60% of new grads quite their first nursing job withing 6 months and the majority in the first 4 to 5 weeks. The other thing is that I'm serious addicted to this damn penguin boxen. I don't watch much TV anymore and if I want to listen to music... Well I typing at the player. Nursing sucks, computers are far more interesting IMHO. I am moving in a couple of months to San Diego (old home town) and hope to have my 2nd B.S in computer sci, or either go to a very good and reputable trade school and get my degree there so I can get out of medicine in around 18 to 24 months after that. Hmmm. Wonder how I'll do in the tech industry? Oh, and the coffee? Very dark, usually French roast or darker, and on average 4+ cups per day. I hope that satisfies your curisosity. :) Cheers, Curtis. P.S. I wondered if someone was gonna notice.

Since I can get to a command line, and I (think I) can use vim, what is the X config file I need to edit manually?
It's /etc/X11/XF86Config. You might be able to delete(or rename it to .bak) and try sax2 again. If that dosn't work, maybe try using the command line setup utilities, xf86cfg and xf86config. I know it's one of the weaknesses with SuSE's X setup with sax2, if it gets setup wrong during install, you just run into this "blank screen roadblock". Maybe you have an old XF86Config from an earlier install? I always keep my old XF86Config files, because of situations like yours. -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation
Chuck and Zentara,
Thanks for your posts. I'm top posting to save you from scrolling...
Basically, the problem is that my monitor is not in the SuSE monitor
database, but sax2 thinks the monitor string identifies itself as a Samsung
4S. Consequently, none of the solutions involving sax2 worked for me (at
first).
What I did was boot into a command line as root, and then I ran
"Xf86Config4", which works a lot like the old Xf86config app. I used this
tool to create a new monitor definition, and I defined the monitor as a
VESA-compliant monitor (which the Samsung is).
Then I could boot normally.
To tidy up, I then ran sax2 from KDE and changed the bad old SuSE-created
Samsung 4S monitor definition (I haven't figured out how to delete monitor
definitions using sax2 yet) into the same VESA-compliant definition I used
for the new monitor definition I created with Xf86Config4. In this way, the
two monitors defined on my system are identical.
I am now running at 1280x1024 at a 16-bit color depth just fine.
The video card, BTW, is a Matrox G450 dual-head. This was configured by SuSE
correctly (I don't use the Matrox beta Linux driver; I find it has
problems). I don't believe there was ever any issue with the video card in
my case.
Thanks again for all of your help!
