I've been through the howtos, I've tried everything in "DNS and Bind" (version 8 though). I've spent a lot of time looking and there seems to be only one howto. I can't get dig to find anything other than localhost, which is what yast setup. Are there any resources that any of you can recommend? -- Jim Sabatke Hire Me!! - See my resume at http://my.execpc.com/~jsabatke Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons, for you are crunchy and good with ketchup. You don't need a resource for dig to work. It uses DNS lookup, if your machine is given a nameserver resolv in /etc/resolv. Are you able to connect, and what is your /etc/resolv telling you, and maybe route. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Registered Linux user 231871

Thanks. I meant "resource" as in book, or howto. I know dig is working fine. It works fine for localhost. I've been working on DNS on my server, and from my server I can't setup a zone that finds that server (from the server). I have been doing this with the server listed first in resolv.conf, along with two nameservers from my ISP. I've never done anything with route. BTW, I've tried a couple of tools to generate zone files from /etc/hosts. Some of them are badly out of date (bind 4) and some of them err on IPV6 def's. None of them give me a working set of files. I have a very simple network and don't understand why I'm having this much trouble. (Am somewhat afraid to wait for an answer/opinion on that matter. I started to use Yast to set up DNS. I made the zone files and started to enter records. When I exited, it lost most of the records :-( I then went into Webmin and edited the records from there. The combination worked great. IMO Webmin works well for editing both DNS and DHCP although my keys for dynamic updates and initial zone files were created easily in Yast. as always ... YMMV Louis

Webmin did it for me too. It works now, but hasn't resolved my net slowness.
