[SuSE Linux] Happy SuSE-linux user!
Hi everybody, I just wanted to post a positive message, just to show that a newbie (the first time I touched a computer was only 6 months ago) can enjoy linux very much even though it's difficult for me to understand. Also I think it's normal that alot of things go wrong in the beginning, but I don't "whine" about it, I consider it being a result of my own ignorance, and not suSE's so-called lack of support. I must admit it's easier to post a message to this group if you have some problem than to go looking for the solution yourself. I try to avoid this though because I'm afraid to look silly on the list with 'stupid questions'. Linux is one big adventure-game for me, discovering new information every day, and it feels good just being a newbie, I guess it becomes boring when you know everything. (Sorry, it's only friday-noon and I'm getting all philosophical.) I think SuSE's great ! Hi everyone! I don't seek someone who knows everything about Linux, but one who can help me with this: I want to connect to a SuSE Linux 6.0 system, in a LAN, from a Win95 station. I already do it with a terminal program, so I can enjoy all the text-mode features. Is there any way to use the XWindows interface from my Win95 station? Does anyone know a X-terminal program for DOS/Windows? On the SuSE CD, there is a directory called vnc. Look in there for displaying your X output on Windows, or your Windows output on X. There is also a program called mix that does OK. I've tried xterms, Netscape and StarOffice using it, and most programs work OK, but StarOffice doesn't display well. -- George Toft <A HREF="http://gtoft.dynip.com/LinuxAdvocate/</A">http://gtoft.dynip.com/LinuxAdvocate/</A> Consider Linux - Fast, stable, scalable, priced right and available with commercial support. -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

Look in the dosutils for MiX and the Windows client for vnc "vncviewer.exe" I love vnc. There are so many ideas for what you can do with it in the docs. It is just nice to be able to disconnect from a session without logging out, and be able to come back to it, from any Windows or Linux (or any Unix box) on the net, and find all your windows just where you left them. (Actually any web browser that can run Java - see the docs.) Running Xvnc on the same PC as XFree86 is running can be a little heavy on memory [I have 32 MB RAM for Linux, and with Netscape, Emacs, Xvnc and XFree86 all running it goes to swap heaven now and then, but still never had to reboot :-)] Invest in a 3-button mouse for your Windows machine and life with vnc will be a little more fun (I don't think vnc can Emulate 3-Buttons but it lets you swap buttons 2 and 3 if it helps.) You can even remotely view your Windows screen from your Linux box. dproc -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

When you have done all the preliminary work in getting information, checking version numbers, reading FAQs and such, DO NOT HESITATE to ask a question of this group. Linux is a learning experience, just as much as it is an operating system. The stupid questions are the ones that never get asked and that you end up pulling your hair out over when the answer is one or two emails away.

You're exactly right. Linux is a big adventure. The great thing here is that you never get bored because you *never* know everything. Newbies have brought up questions about Linux that make the gurus scratch their heads because they have never experienced it before. SSH = Secure Shell It's a replacement for rlogin, rsh etc. The big advantage is that the connection is encrypted. More info can be found at <A HREF="http://www.ssh.org/</A">http://www.ssh.org/</A> And the package for SuSE 6.0 can be found at <A HREF="ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/6.0/i386.de/suse/n1/</A">ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/6.0/i386.de/suse/n1/</A> I haven't got 6.1, but the package description at <A HREF="http://www.suse.de/e/lx61/Pakete/index.html</A">http://www.suse.de/e/lx61/Pakete/index.html</A> ays that it's part of a security package called "sec". Don't know if this means that it's on the international CD set, though. ---J.T.U. #include <disclaimer.h> \\|// - ?
