"Failed" messages on boot, but the services are running?
Why is it that I see lots of 'failed' messages when I boot my SuSE Linux laptop, but the services which are reported to have failed are actually up and running just fine? I'm running SuSE 9.0. This problem didn't happen with the 2.4 kernel, only with 2.6. I've tried Kraxel's 2.6 kernel RPM, and also a kernel I've compiled myself, and I get the same results with each. When I look at /var/log/boot.msg I see this line at the end, summing up the services which failed to start: Failed services in runlevel 5: hotplug resmgr xntpd sshd acpid cups nscd cron xdm And the list is slightly different each time; last time (boot.omsg) it was: Failed services in runlevel 5: hotplug resmgr pcmcia xntpd sshd acpid cups nscd cron But all of these services are running just fine! I network through a PCMCIA card, and that's working; I can ssh into this laptop; ACPI is working just fine 'cos I can put the laptop to sleep. I haven't noticed any problems with any services not starting. What's causing all of these spurious 'failed' messages, and how do I get my system to recognize that they actually have NOT failed, so that I can get through a boot without a bunch of red 'failed' messages scrolling by?

No. My SuSE 8.2 get those now and them, even my 7.3 does. I suppose the service starts, but returns a nonzero exit code. A more verbose output would be nice. Also, notice that things like hotplug fails if one of its components (usb, pcmcia, etc) fails.

Perhaps designing a script to run again those failed services, requesting status on them, automatically, when the runlevel is reached. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
