Hi all, just installed 11.2 on my new laptop. I noticed that nscd is creating an immense logfile - something like a kB/s. Now I have several questions: - is this normal? - on startup it tells me 13:03:43.02421 nscd v0.45, debug level 0xf ah, being verbose!? Tried debug-level 0 in /etc/nscd.conf, but that doesn't work - it still reports 0xf and produces tons of output :-(( - apart from that the logfiles show(*) that some process is requesting my /etc/passwd entry every few seconds - is that normal? Any idea how I could find out what that is, and why? (*)at least as I interpret this... Any insight is highly welcome, Pit -- Dr. Peter "Pit" Suetterlin http://www.astro.su.se/~pit Institute for Solar Physics Tel.: +34 922 405 590 (Spain) P.Suetterlin@royac.iac.es +46 8 5537 8507 (Sweden) Peter.Suetterlin@astro.su.se -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks for pointing it out, I hadn't noticed it, but the same is happening on my machine

Well, no. I'd call it a configuration bug. It is logging far too much for a default install

Remove the logfile directive from nscd.conf

This is normal. Every time you do anything on a command line, the shell looks up entries in passwd (or whatever backend you're using) in order to translate user IDs to user names Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Most likely you're not the only one :-o
Remove the logfile directive from nscd.conf
Yes, that's how it was in my old (11.0) installation. Still weird that the debuglevel doesn't seem to work...

Ah, makes sense. Thanks! I just looked at the source, and it does a bitwise or with the default log level and the value from the config file, which means you can essentially never get rid of the default logging It is certainly counter intuitive, and I would call it a bug. It has already been filed though: it is bug 575736 Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
