Dear Friends, I would like to ask wheather is it possible to do prepaid internet using Linux. What i meant is, that i buy a card containing a user id and password. This card entitled to say 10 minutes of credit. Is there a way to count how long the user has been online in real time, and terminate the user connection once the total usage reach 10 mins. radius not is suitable for this. I have received an answer from the developer of the firewals package. He told me, that this problem has been solved with the new firewals package (2.0) that is available in our download area: I tried 2.0 and 2.1 but the problem was still there. The external network interface dies after a few hours and cannot be restarted even by rebooting.

Looks like some kind of race condition to me. It seems like the firewalling script sets up some rules, that disable the DHCP client ability to receive an IP address from the DHCP server. Thus the interface does not have a valid IP address. I am no firewall expert, but you should try to open up the port on which DHCP offers are being received. The DHCP Danke schoen, Lenz. You are the only one who provided help that actually led to the solution. The rejected packet from the dhcp server was proto=1 (ICMP) port 0. I looked through the firewall configuration file for anything relating to ICMP. In item 16 (FW_KERNEL_SECURITY) I noticed that icmp is mentioned several times so I set FW_KERNEL_SECURITY="no". This fixed the problem. Thanks again for looking at the problem and providing real help.
Did you ever let us know of your problems via either support or feedback@suse.de ? Did you check the update directory on our FTP server or its mirrors? I only got an automated response to e-mail. As mentioned above, I got the lastest (2.1) firewals package but this didn't solve the

The support database is good because at least there I was able to find out that the masquerading had been moved to the new firewals package but nowhere did SuSE mention that the new firewals package (1.2) was useless and I see no mention of the problems with 2.x and dhcp either. Am I really so unreasonable for wanting more than just a rtfm kind of answer, especially when the "fm" (in this case the support database) is inaccurate or incomplete? Why doesn't SuSE update the support database to show the CD firewals is bad and to show the need for the later one? Why not cover the issue of dhcp and the firewals package?
