[opensuse] xmms and mp3 - RC1
I've installed RC1 and installed the packages from pm. I can play mp3 from amarok, xine and other progams. However, I prefer the simplicity of xmms. Unfortunately, it is the only one that doesn't seem to be able to play mp3. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Add the Packman repositories to your list. Spicifically, you need a non-crippled libmad. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

Uh, I tend to disagree. On 10.1, I could install i586/xmms-1.2.10-103.pm.1.i586.rpm and i586/xmms-lib-1.2.10-103.pm.1.i586.rpm and everything worked. Now being on 10.2 RC1, installing i586/xmms-1.2.10-200.pm.1.i586.rpm and i586/xmms-lib-1.2.10-200.pm.1.i586.rpm does not help. packman does not have any libmad, so what to do? -`J' -- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Did not help. xmms, xmms-lib and mad installed but xmms skips all mp3 stuff. But the problem lies therein that pack101/i586/xmms-lib.rpm contains libmpg123.so, while pack102/i586/xmms-lib.rpm does not. It landed in xmms-devel! wt? -`J' -- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Ah, well, yes xmms would work but as distributed from SUSE it will not play mp3, either locally or streamed. Who knows what else is crippled intentionally. Just add this packman mirror to your installation sources : http://mirror.geht-schon.de/packman.links2linux.de/suse/10.2/ and it will fix xmms and a few other things that need fixing. They also have a fully working xine and mplayer there. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

Just add this packman mirror to your installation sources :
No, that would pull in a bunch of unnecessary packages. Until smart supports the "experimental" channel, it's deactivated. That said, having it in smart would not have helped.

My MPlayer works fine enough, I do not need theirs. -`J' -- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No it does not "pull in a bunch of unnecessary packages". Where did you get the impression that everything in a repository is "pulled in"? -- _____________________________________ John Andersen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

So what's you point? Packman has newer packages and it upgrades those. You don't have to accept any given upgrade if you don't want. These have dependencies, which are also satisfied. That list is FAR from the total packages on packman. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

I don't want it. Period. That's why I am wanting this "experimental" tag in smart (and some other tag in rpm), so that only packages that I actually installed from there are considered for upgrade.
Packman has newer packages and it upgrades those. You don't have to accept any given upgrade if you don't want.
Yeah but the nice thing in `smart upgrade` is that you do no have to list all packages to install/upgrade. If packman was enabled, I had to go by `smart upgrade` to get the list of updates, then Ctrl+C and redo using `smart install <all packages I want, without those I don't want>`. That's tiring. So pm is disabled atm.
Where did you get the impression that everything in a repository is "pulled in"? That list is FAR from the total packages on packman.
Where did I say that everything is pulled? I said _a bunch_. -`J' -- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
