[S.u.S.E. Linux] informix for linux
Has anyone used the newly available informix SE for linux? It particularly states "made for RedHat and SuSE". Im downloading it as we speak. Its about 9mb in size and the connection seems rather poky. Check out www.informix.com for details. -- Michael E. I know its in bad taste to followup my email but... I am curious if whether anyone getting the informix bundle was able to untar and unzip the contents. It seems that the installer directories for me are damaged. Has anyone gotten the archives and successfully extracted them? Could someone tell me exactly what is in theese directories? Thanks. -- Michael E. Perry mperry@basin.com - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

If it wasn't so late, I'd get it tonight, but I'll grab it tomorrow and maybe I'll have better luck with it. Fred -- Fred A. Miller, Systems Administrator Cornell Univ. Michael, I have downloaded and untarred. Basically it unzips into a series of tar files. The tar files contain the required files for installation. I ran the installation and it appears to work correctly but I haven't read the doc's far enough to figure out how to start the engine. FWIW, I looked at Informix's pricing. As near as I can deduce it will be about $295.00 USD per seat. This is substantially more than ~$150.00 for MS SQL Server. I think it is alot more than Interbase also. I know Sybase SQL Anywhere doesn't have a Linux version (but I suspect they soon will). Their pricing is about $80 USD Per seat. Personally, I want to look at the 10 seat version of ADABAS and see how it works. George Sexton MH Software, Inc. George, Informix told me the license charge was $250.00 a seat. Adabas D for linux is a very nice product!! I'm using Informix for a project that requires the *serial* data type (auto incrementing) which Adabas D does not have. Later Lach George Sexton wrote:

Just for those who havent looked yet, the free informix distribution is three TAR files, SE (Informix Standard Engine, v7.24.UC5), Informix Connect and Informix ESQL/C. Not much in the way of documentation but the release notes are below: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ================================= MACHINE SPECIFIC NOTES FOR INFORMIX-SE 7.24.UC5 PRODUCT RELEASE DATE: 13 Jul 1998 ================================= PORT NUMBER: 025870 (CD ROM) IRIS JOB NUMBER: 17723 Machine Specific Notes: ======================= 1. This version of SE has been tested with the following configuration: Pentium II - 400 Mhz running CALDERA OpenLinux Version 1.2 (linux 2.0.33). 2. The following protocol(s)/interface(s) are supported for this platform: SOCKETS/TCP. To use TCP/IP, the nettype field in the sqlhosts file entry must contain "sesoctcp". 3. TERMINFO is not supported on Linux. 4. Known Bugs in this release. Bug # Description 97080 THE INFORMIX ERROR MESSAGE 647 NOT SUPPORTED ON LINUX. The Informix Error Message 647 (Error evaluating math library function "function-name") is reported when the data type of the argument is correct, but the value passed to the function is not appropiate for the math function. Informix depends on the matherr() function supplied by the operating system math library to support this error message. The math library on Linux does not supply matherr(). Hence Informix Error Message 647 is not supported on Linux. TO install: # mkdir /usr/informix # cd /usr/informix # INFORMIXDIR=/usr/informix # tar xvf SE.TAR # useradd informix # ./installse ... and put in the License keys Have Fun.....(sic.)
