Does anyone has any experience on actually updating (to a newer version) by ftp (using YAST) instead of using the newer CD? As far as I understand, in order to upgrade from 7.3 to 8.1 I would have to boot from my current 7.3 cd and then select update. No you need to boot from the cd image you downloaded from the ftpserver since an update usually involves new kernel new glibc etc you should be booting from the "to be updated sysyem" which in this case would be the CD image you have downloaded and burned on a CD -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://dinamizm.ath.cx

I too have been trying this update. After booting from the new CD (made with boot.iso) I get to where I am prompted for the ftp server's address. However I only know the ftp.suse.com/public blah blah blah. What is the correct IP address for the ftp server ? Regards Mark -- Mark Annandale SuSE 8 Pro - KDE 3.0.5 - KMail 1.4.3
Hi, I've managed to mirror 8.1 from ftp to my server in order to install on 5 PC's, however this is the first and the last time I'm doing an SuSE ftp installation. The procedure is as follows 1. Create a boot disk or CD and boot with it. 2. Unlike packaged versions, ftp version fails to detect ethernet, so do a manual installation. 3. After loading necessary kernel module for ethernet, setup the network parameters. (The ftp path is described in README.FTP) 4. There's no update option in Yast for ftp installation. You only have the new installation and boot installed operating system options. 5. No matter which protocol you use, http, ftp, nfs and samba, it *always* hang during intallation. I've tried man combinations of servers, PC's, protocols, and even cross cable. So, my intention of installing 8.1 from ftp turned out to be a waste of my time. The reason why I'm nerveous about this is that I've been using SuSE since 5.3 and always had the package. However here in Turkey, the so called distributor and reseller almost *refuse* to sell 8.1. They keep telling that they're gonna order next month. What I did is simply order from Amazon. I'm now waiting for the package to arrive. BTW, I've sent many detailed complaint letters to SuSE and they simply ignored. To cut it short, don't even try to bother. Regards, Oyku Gencay Mark Annandale wrote:

They actually have to refuse since I bet they have enough 8.0 unsold in their hands and they have to get rid pf the old version first. Himm maybe SuSE should buy them back and replace with version 8.1 Or consider this its such a small market SuSE has not bothered to have a better deal with another distributor/reseller or the other way around it may not justify the efforts put by the distributor/reseller to reorder or make a new order. It's always a two way road and then you have the customer driving towards you to avoid crash better let the customer pass :-) -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://dinamizm.ath.cx
Oyku, Many thanks for your message, it's great help. I give up and get the cds. What I don't understand is why suse does not offer this type of service. I would be happy to pay for a subscription with easy and fast upgrades. Hi, That'd be really great. I'm sure nobody would want to deal with local resellers trying to dump a previous version. It's much easier to buy from Amazon etc. However from the business point of view this should give a hint to SuSE people about their strategy on markets of smaller sizes. I thought it would just accept the name of the server like ftp.suse.com or ftp.gwdg.de ftp.gwdg.de 134.76.11.100 ftp.suse.com 217.9.113.66 -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://dinamizm.ath.cx

They said they booted from the cd-rom version. As I recall, that won't have stuff set up properly for DNS etc.... Maybe I am completely off-base, but I thought it was the case.
