RE: [SLE] Playing mp3 files -> use packman

You can get everything from any updated packman distro: ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/packman/suse/ -- MortenB

But my hunt for the information via google didn't reveal that. Perhaps there are good search tools for the archives of this list, but going through them month by month is not a reasonable way to find anything.

I'm curious: where does the packman distro come from, and how does it relate to the actual SuSE distribution? Paul

Packman isn't a Linux distribution, it's a collection of utilities, improvements, updates, add-ons etc for the ordinary SuSE distribution. torsdag 21 september 2006 15:55 skrev Paul Abrahams:

Who funds packman? How do the people support themselves? Are these SUSE employees working on a side project? The people at packman are very nice and have been helpful whenever I have asked them a question or pointed out some problem. I really appreciate this site being active as it fills out some of my needs. Bob

I don't know, but I like the site a lot. I may even try to install their MythTv system, which previously I've always compiled from tarballs. If they had advertising links I'd click them but even the links seem to point to non-profit sites. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

Acutally you can use Google for that. Just utilize the site: keyword. For example to search on multimedia or mp3 in this archive, you'd enter the following search terms: mp3 10.1 site:lists.suse.com It isn't perfect, but does provide a good starting point. I use it often in order to avoid getting the dreaded, "we've already discussed that," lecture. I found xmms and mplayer there, but amarok does not seem to be there. (I tried both amarok and Amarok.) Paul

pin amarok, will tell you if it's on your install disks.

Oh, the amarok without mp3 support certainly is, since I've installed it. But I'm looking for the one *with* mp3 support, and it doesn't seem to be at packman (for SuSE 1.0, at least). Paul

IIRC, you don't need to worry about that. You simply need to update either the xine or helix engine. -- Kai Ponte www.perfectreign.com || www.4thedadz.com remember - a turn signal is a statement, not a request
