Are there any problems to look out for when installing 10.1 on an AMD 64 Dual-Core?
Hi all, Soon after 10.1 arrived on the scene, I purchased the DVD version and installed it on my Athlon XP2000. I had almost sorted it all out and had it running the way I like when the hard drive died. I replaced that and the memory went out soon after re-installing 10.1. So I ordered a new upgrade (AMD Dual-Core 64 3800) for my box. The upgraded computer should be ready for the installation of 10.1 by Tuesday evening. I have enjoyed SuSE on AMD Athlons since May, 2000 when I bought my first boxed version of SuSE (6.4). I've had many hours of uneventful installs installing SuSE on 32 bit computers since 7.2 (6.4 was anything but effortless). Is there anything about installing SuSE 10.1 on a 64 bit machine I should be aware of, or is the install on a 64 bit machine as easy as installing on a 32 bit machine? Thanks-Tom Thomas E. Just as easy. I've used nothing but AMD chips for years. When I did this upgrade to a dual opteron system, the 32bit ran fine. Yes, I had to change some of the hardware, but I was prepared for that. When XP complained, and wouldn't boot without major work, I blew it away and installed 10.0 64bit in it's place. The install went fine, and it even picked up the 32bit version in grub. Wouldn't change it for the world now. Mike -- Powered by SuSE 10.0 Kernel 2.6.13 KDE 3.4 Kmail 1.8 9:37pm up 12:39, 4 users, load average: 2.20, 2.16, 2.18

There is no difference in the install process, though you may want to install 32 bit browsers, as 64 bit pluggins aren't available.

I'm happily running 10.1 on this exact hardware: Athlon 64 3800+ dual core (in a cheapo Biostar CRU51-M9 motherboard with integrated nvidia video). No complaints. The installation was no different from that on a 32 bit machine; all my hardware was properly detected and the appropriate modules were selected. The only trouble I've had so far is with my HP 6100 series all-in-one. The printer part works fine but I can't get the either the hpoj or hpaio 64 bit modules to work. No big deal for me as the printer is shared between several computers so I just use another one to scan. Linux is way ahead of Windows when it comes to 64 bit support. -- N. B.
