I have my boxes set up to disable artsd if inactive for 5 seconds. Control Center --> Sound & Multimedia --> Sound System --> Autosuspend, there it gives an explanation of what happens and artsd gets started again when it's needed.
Ok I set that for 5 seconds. I also did a ps -ef | grep arts and killed a artsd/kde process that seemed suspended. Then, I went into "Sounds & Notifications" and turned "All Sounds" to "Off". And you know what -- suddenly my regular sound has a much higher volume ( I don't have to have all the sliders on maximum to hear anything ) with digital sound ( the analog sound of CDs always seemed fine ) My intuition is that arts is has been a huge problem for audio in Suse since 9.1 and they should just get rid of it -- system sounds are important, but they shouldn't take priority over so many other functions. That kind of design reminds me of Windows XP where simple application processes can /take/ /over/. Look, if I don't hear a system sound because a more application level process has died, I don't care. But if the artsd system constantly contributes to my being unable to enjoy my multimedia content -- and, as I suspect, contributes to general GUI crashes and other performance problems -- then get rid of arts!

Question:
How do you /configure/ artsd?
Peter is referring to the suggestion I offered yesterday. He is on 9.2 and that's how his boxes also look for sound setup in the Control Center. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ...
