[opensuse] Opensuse and faulty wifi connection
Hi I don't know if anybody else has experienced something like this. But please chime in if you have any idea or information. My otherwise very nice and rather new HP ProBook 4720 has a serious problem with wifi. It gave up on my home net (very old 802.11A/B) It can see it on the iwconfig level, but quickly diconnects. At work there's another net (802.11.g?) and it connects. But it loses connection several times a day, and will only reconnect if I disable and enable wireless. The Probook has a RT3090 chip, and rt2860sta is automatically used. There's a wifi button on the keyboard, but it never changes color. I _think_ that the problems started about 1-2 weeks ago. At least I know that the home net worked in the beginning. I'm not sure if I did something, if it's an effect of upgrading something (kernel, e.g.) or what. It's OpenSuse 11.3 64 bit. -- Med venlig hilsen Kaare Rasmussen, Jasonic Email: kaare@jasonic.dk -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

If something has not become intermittent in your laptop, you might want to try wicd as your connection manager. seen peace since i nstalled it almost 2 years ago. d. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Trying it now. It didn't really help @ home, where it will not get an IP address. Not a big problem, I can wire up. Here at work it seems to have reduced the number of blackouts. But I've experienced one time with lost connectivity. -- Med venlig hilsen Kaare Rasmussen, Jasonic Jasonic Telefon: +45 3816 2582 Nordre Fasanvej 12 2000 Frederiksberg Email: kaare@jasonic.dk -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Kaare, Which kernel are you running? When did you do your last kernel update? With my 11.3 laptop (atheros wireless), I would experience lockups when then driver loaded. This bug was apparently fixed: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=628166 But I haven't confirmed. I switched to 2.6.35 when it was in kernel/HEAD. I am not familiar with your chip, so I can't give specific help. After seeing the disconnect with iwconfig, can you still see the AP? Try using either: wlanconfig <your wireless dev, wlan0/ath0> list scan or iwlist <your wireless dev, wlan0/ath0> scan If you can still see your AP after the drop out, then it looks like your driver is still active. The issue then is "what cause the drop out". If you can no longer see the AP, then it looks like your driver died (mem corruption, overwritten -- who knows). Sorry I can't be of more help here. Maybe some other realtek brain can jump in. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. No, it's completely black. -- Med venlig hilsen Kaare Rasmussen, Jasonic Jasonic Telefon: +45 3816 2582 Nordre Fasanvej 12 2000 Frederiksberg Email: kaare@jasonic.dk -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
